Folk Arts and Crafts of
Mindoro, Marinduque,
Romblon, and Palawan
• The island provinces of Marinduque,
Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental
Mindoro are known for their art of
basketry and mat weaving.

• In Marinduque, the art of making mats


using raffias and buri is a popular
livelihood in the communities.
Marinduque is known for the Mariones
festival every Lenten season.
Romblon
Romblon is not only known for its marble crafts,
but also for their sense of artistry in making
woven.
Palawan
• Palawan is internationally known as “The Last
Frontier” of the country. Its cultural and natural
resources are very rich. Who would not recognize
the Puerto Princesa’s underground river that was
recently recognized as one the New7Wonders of
Nature? It was recognized as such on January 2012.
• Palawan is also known for its largest marine
habitat, the Tubbataha reef. This marine sanctuary
is considered as one of the UNESCO’s World
Heritage Sites. The place has very rare and
phenomenal rock formations, flora, and fauna.
• The Filipino sense of art was already evident during
the early times. It is evident that the early Filipinos
had already their own concept of painting using
clay mixed water. This can be found in their ritual
potter such as the much admired Manunggul jar.
It is believed that the early people in Palawan were the Tagbanuas. They
are believed to be the descendants of Tabon man. they already had a
writing system that they used in communicating with one another, Similar
to Buhid and Hanunuo scripts of the Mangyans. In Mindoro, these earliest
handwriting symbolize the early attempts of the early Filipinos to
document their own arts and culture.
The Tagbanua’s attire came
from the bark of trees know as
salugin. The early men in this
tribe wore loincloth with
ambalad, a rattan waistland.
Basketry is well-known in
Palawan too. The Tagbanua of
Central Palawan makes rice
baskets called bayo-bayong of
various unusual shapes.

Western Visayas: Panay
and Negros Island
Panay Island
Aklan
The province of Aklan is
also known for basket, tray,
and mat making.

The island of Panay is also


known for its magnificent
houses and churches.
Common Aklan terms in
doing crafts
Bariw – is the type of pandan leaves used in their mat making.
Pagrarara it banig – means “mat weaving.” In their culture, it is
also a form of social interaction with their friends and neighbors.

Capiz or Kapis – is one of the most noted crafts in Aklan and Iloilo. Kapis
crafts are shells collected from the sea, dried, pressed, shaped and cut according to
the desired shapes and forms. The products made of kapis shells are laps,
trays,jewelries, window designs, souvenir items, and others.
Negros Island
The art of weaving is an essential part
of the Negrense’s rich culture. Their
weaving practices are evident in their
roofs clothing, walls, hats, and basket.
In their basket making, they usually
use pandan and buri leaves.

Like in Aklan, the art of pinya weaving


is also a lucrative business in Negros.
They import raw materials in Aklan and
they also have their own weaving
styles and designs.
The people from Valencia,
Negros also have a
unique way of making
sinamay textile. It is made
from abaca, similar to the
one of Bicol region. The
natural fiber is dyed,
woven, and stiffed for the
productions of varied
crafts like hats.
Hablon – is a heritage industry in Iloilo. It is not only
means of livelihood but also part of Iloilo’s culture and
tradition. It is derived from the Hiligaynon word habol which
means “to weave”

Handloomed weaving – is the primary art


and one of the best sources of livelihood in Panay island.

Patadyong – is a traditional Filipino cloth worn by


women and wrapped around like a skirt. This is usually has
a colorful pattern of linear and geometrical designs.

Pinya or Jusi – a traditional cloth making of the


people from Aklan. It would usually take two months to
finish a 10-meter long jusi cloth. The process of making
pinya cloth is really tedious, and entails a lot of sacrifices.
Its delicate and sharp fibers can cause the weavers
multiple cuts to their hands.

Central and East Visayas
Cebu
Cebu
is known as the “Queen City of the South.” it is the
oldest settlement established by the Spaniards.
Nowadays, it is considered as one of the most
important metropolitan centers in the country.

Most furniture exporters and designers from


the Philippines are from Cebu like Kenneth
Cobonpue.

Guitar making is one of the most popular folk


crafts in Cebu. Their guitars are known for its
unique sound, durability, and well-crafted
design.
Samar, Leyte, and Biliran Islands
The art of Basey in Samar is known for its colorful and handwoven banig or
mat that came from the tigok leaves. There are two processes in making a
basey: weaving which is locally known as baniglara and embroidery or burda.
The integration of the art of weaving is evident in their culinary arts too. This
delicacy is also locally known as puso.
Bohol
In the Bohol town of Antequera, the art of basketry is
still popular among the people. It is a source of
livelihood to the community.
Bohol is also known for the people’s religiosity. Before the tremendous
earthquake happened in 2013, old historical churches stood beautifully in their
place.
