Addison's disease

Is a condition characterized by deficiency of production of adrenocorticosteroids from adrenal


gland. It is mainly the deficiency of cortisol. ie; hypocortisolism.
Presentations;
 Extreme fatigue & lack of energy
 Weight loss and decreased appetite
 Hypotension
 Hypoglycemia
 Hyponatremia, hyperkalemia
 Hyperpigmentation
 High levels of ACTH
Treatment ;
• Fludrocortisone aldosterone agonist
• Hydrocortisone cortisol agonist
Cushing syndrome.
Is a condition resulting from overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal glands or exposure to high cortisol
levels due to prolonged use of steroids such as prednisone.
Other causes include increased stress , depression, alcoholism, tumor in adrenal or pituitary gland and
malnutrition.
Presentation ;
 A rounded face
 A fatty hump between shoulders at the back
 High blood pressure
 Hyperglycemia / type 2 diabetes
 Weight gain
 Skin thinning and easy bruising
Monitoring ;
• Medication to block effect of cortisol eg; ketoconazole
• Surgery to remove tumors
• Manage weight and blood sugar
