Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory

Trait Theory
• The trait theory says that there are certain identifiable qualities or characteristics that are
unique to leaders and those good leaders possess such qualities.
• List of Qualities:
• Intelligence
• Personality
• Scientific spirit
• Social sensitivity
• Ability to communicate
• Objectivity

Situation Theory
• Leader’s ability to adjust to the situation in front of her, than about personal leadership
skills.
• Situational leadership theory places a specific focus on matching leadership style with
follower requirements.

• The four leadership styles, introduced by Blanchard & Hersey, • Maturity Levels are also called Readiness

 Telling

 Selling • Level M1: Low Competence: High

Harzberg Two Factor Theory
• American psychologist (1923-2000)

• He was more convinced about importance of non-financial factors.

• Motivators: Factors that directly motivate people to work harder. e.g. Responsibility at
work, meaningful work, achievement, recognition etc.

• Hygiene: Factors that can demotivate if not present but do not actually motivate
employees to work harder. e.g. Pay, rewards, working conditions, proper supervision,
proper policies etc.

• Motivate by using motivators

• Ensure hygiene factors are met

Situation Theory

Situation Theory
• The situation approach does not deny the importance of individual traits in leadership.

• But it goes further and asserts that leadership pattern is the product of a situation in a
particular group and that leadership will be different in different situations.
• This approach was the result of the most extensive programme of research about
leadership styles and effective group performance carried out by Fred E. Fiedler.
