Poetic Devices
What is a Poem?

A poem is a piece of writing that


exoresses one’s stories, thoughts,
and feelings that usually follows a
particular pattern and rhyme.
A rhyme is an element of a poem
that makes sound pattern at the end
of each line of a poem. It shows
certain rhythm based on the
rhyming scheme used by the poet.

Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates the natural
sound of an object being
described.
Examples
☆ I can hear the quack-quack of
the duck outside the hut.
☆ The ticktock, ticktock of the
clock was all that could be heard
in the hospital waiting room.
Alliteration
It is the repetition of the same
consonant sound at the
beginning of words that are in
close proximity to each other.
Examples
☆ Larry’s lizard likes leaping
leopards.
☆ Peter Piper picked a peck of
pickled pepper.
☆Betty Botter bought some butter,
but she said this butter’s bitter.
Assonance
Repeated vowel sounds in a line
or lines of poetry.
Examples
☆ The peel of the eel is eerie to
feel.
( repetition of the long “e” sound )
☆ Try to light the fire.
( repetition of the short “i” sound )
Consonance
Repeated consonant sound
( can be anywhere in the words )
in a line or lines of poetry.
Examples
☆ confident ☆ On scrolls of silver
☆ concern snowy sentences,
☆ calling some mammals are
☆ caring clammy, dragging the
lazy languid line along.
Personification
An animal or object that is given
human-like qualities.
Examples
☆ The sun stared at me from above.
☆ The ocean danced in the moonlight.
☆ The wind howled in the night.
☆ Rita heard the last piece of pie
calling her name.
Irony
A word used to emphasize the
opposite meaning of another
word.
Examples
☆ Look,there is a fish drowning!
☆ A fire station burns down.
☆ A marriage counselor files for
divorce.
Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement to
give emphasis.
Examples
☆ The train of the wedding dress
extends to the bride’s house.
☆ I have a million things to do!
☆ You have been talking the entire
day without a pause, can you stay
quiet?
Not all poems, however, have
rhyming words at the end.
There are also free-verse
poems with aords that do not
rhyme at the end of each line.
Sound devices are elements of a
poem that are used to suggest
images, to highlight meanings and
messages, and to produce
emotional responses. Assonance
and consonance are both figures of
sound.
