What are Nouns?

 They are also called as “building blocks of languages”


 Itis a word that functions as the name of specific thing
or set of things, such as living creatures, objects, places,
actions, qualities, states of existence, or ideas.
Singular and Plural Nouns

Singular nouns are nouns that name only


one person, place, or thing.
Plural nouns are nouns that name two or
more people, places, or things.

 Add –s to the base form to form the plural form of most
nouns.
EXAMPLES: (a) Barry wants to buy that bag .
(b) Barry wants to buy those bags .

Plural Nouns
 Singular nouns ending in –s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or –z, need an –
es at the end of the base form to form its plural form.
EXAMPLES:
(a) The match that he bought is expensive.
(b) The matches that he bought are expensive.

 In some cases, singular nouns ending in –s or –z, require that
you double the –s or –z prior to adding the –es for
pluralization.
EXAMPLES:
(a) There is a quiz on Wednesday.
(b) There are quizzes on Wednesday.

 For nouns that end in –y with a consonant, before the –y,
change the –y to an I and add –es.
EXAMPLES:
(a) One family is affected by the typhoon.
(b) Many families are affected by the typhoon.

 For nouns that end in –y with a vowel before the –y, just add
–s.
EXAMPLES:
(a) Larry saw a monkey around the village.
(b) Larry saw a lot of monkeys in the zoo.

 For nouns that end in –f or –fe, remove the –f or –fe and add
–ves.
EXAMPLES:
(a) Mother said that there is one rare loaf of bread in the
Southeastern Asia.
(b) Mother said that there are two rare loaves of bread in
the Southeastern Asia.
▪︎wolf – wolves ▪︎knife – knives ▪︎life - lives

 For nouns that end with a consonant before an o, add –es.
EXAMPLES:
(a) The farmer harvests one potato.
(b) The farmers harvest a lot of potatoes in the farm.

form.
EXAMPLES:
(a) Poland looks for a mysterious sheep.
