Topic : Wet Bulb Depression

• The wet bulb depression is the difference between the dry-
bulb temperature (Air temperature) and the wet-bulb
temperature.

• It is measured by a Psychomotor .

 What is the wet bulb depression ?

 The temperature difference in degrees between dry-bulb temperature and wet-

bulb temperature is called the wet-bulb depression.

 It is used to determine the air's relative humidity or dew point from a psychrometric table.

 It is measured by a psychomotor.

 If there is 100% humidity, dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures are identical, making the
wet-bulb depression equal to zero in such conditions

 Wet bulb depression is greatest during the summer

 This wet-bulb depression then allows the relative humidity to be calculated

01/01/23 4
 What is the wet bulb depression ?

 A decrease in the humidity of the air brings an increase in the

difference between dry and wet bulb temperatures, which is called
wet-bulb depression.

 Wet Bulb Depression shows how less is Wet Bulb Temperature

from Dry bulb temperature. For a saturated air sample it is ZERO as
WBT =DBT for saturated air.

 Wet-bulb depression is The extent to which the temperature

recorded by a ventilated wet-bulb thermometer falls below the dry-
bulb air temperature.

01/01/23 5
 What is Dry bulb temperature ?

 The dry-bulb temperature is the temperature of air measured by

a thermometer freely exposed to the air, but shielded from
radiation and moisture.

 DBT is the temperature that is usually thought of as air

temperature, and it is the true thermodynamic temperature.

 The dry bulb temperature is the ambient temperature.

 Dry bulb temperature (DBT) is the temperature of the moist air

as measured by a standard thermometer or other temperature
measuring instruments

 This is the temperature of air measured by a thermometer whose

‘ bulb is dry , not in touch with water or any other liquid.

01/01/23 6
 What is Wet bulb temperature ?

 The wet-bulb temperature is the temperature read by a

thermometer covered in water-soaked cloth over which air is
passed.

 At 100% relative humidity, the wet-bulb temperature is equal

to the air temperature; at lower humidity the wet-bulb
temperature is lower than dry-bulb temperature because of
evaporative cooling.

 The Wet Bulb temperature is the temperature of adiabatic

saturation. This is the temperature indicated by a moistened
thermometer bulb exposed to the air flow.

 It is the temperature attained by a small amount of evaporating

water in a manner such that the sensible heat transferred from
the liquid is equal to the latent heat required for the
evaporation.

 How to find dry bulb and wet bulb temperature from graph ?

Dry bulb and wet bulb temperature in Graph

01/01/23 8
 Example :

Determine the value of wet bulb depression with the help of given data.
Humidity = 0.05
Dry bulb temperature = 80 °C

Ans: From graph first we can find wet bulb temperature.

then we will find wet bulb depression.

wet bulb temperature from graph = 45 °C

by this two value, We can find
wet bulb depression = TG – TW = 80 – 45 = 35 °C

Graph is on next page,

01/01/23 9
  Psychrometric chart

01/01/23
Wet bulb temp. Dry bulb 10
it is 45°C temp.
 Equation of Wet bulb Depression

• Equation:

Here Tg – Tw is called wet bulb depression.

Y’ – Humidity of the ambient air,
Y’W - Saturation humidity of air at temperature Tw
Hg/Ky’ - ratio of the heat and the mass transfer coefficient

= 0.227 kcal/kg·°C

• A quick technique that many forecasters use to determine the wet-bulb temperature is called the
"1/3 rule". The technique is to first find the dew-point depression. Then take this number and
divide by 3. Subtract this number from the temperature, you can get wet bulb depression.

01/01/23 11
 Conclusion:

• Basically Difference between the dry-bulb temperature and the wet-bulb temperature
is wet bulb depression
• The equation of wet bulb depression can be used to calculate the wet-bulb
temperature if hg and ky’ are known or are estimated using a suitable correlation.
• This wet-bulb depression allows the relative humidity to be calculated; as we
discussed.
• WBD is also useful for some industrial purpose.
