SOIL STABILIZATION

• It a process by which the engineering

properties of a soil are transformed to
provide permanent strength gains before
construction.

• Stabilization is the process of blending and

mixing of materials with soil.

3
PLASTIC WASTE
• Increase shear strength.

• Available in abundance.

• Economical in terms of price.

• Offer more stability in slope areas.

4
TYPES OF SOIL STABILIZATION
• The three basic types of soil stabilization techniques are
(1) Mechanical stabilization
(2) Chemical stabilization

MECHANICAL STABILIZATION
• In mechanical stabilization, where the stability of
soil is increase by blending the available soil with
imported soil or aggregate .

5
CHEMICAL STABILIZATION
• Mixing of admixtures such as lime, cement, sodium silicate, calcium
chloride, bituminous materials, resinous materials

6
APPLICATIONS OF SOIL STABILIZATION
• Improving durability.
• Increasing shear strength.
• Reducing permeability of
soils.
• Increasing bearing
capacity.
• To enhance bearing
capacity of soil

LITERATURE REVIEW
AUTHOR YEAR FINDINGS
Muntohar,A.S et al., 2013 “ Engineering properties
of silty soil stabilized with
lime and rice husk ash and
reinforced with waste
plastic fiber”.
Mallikarjuna.V et al., 2016 “ Soil stabilization using
plastic waste”.

Neopaney, M et al., 2012 “Stabilization of Soil by

Using plastic wastes”.

8
OBJECTIVE
• To improve the characteristics at site and make soil capable of carrying load .

• To increase the shear strength by decreasing the compressibility of soil .

9
METHODOLOGY

10
METHODOLOGY
• LIQUID LIMIT TEST • PLASTIC LIMIT TEST

11
• SPECIFIC GRAVITY • STANDARD PROCTOR
COMPACTION

12
• SIEVE ANALYSIS • CALIFORNIA BEARING TEST

13
• FREE SWELL INDEX TEST • DIRECT SHEAR TEST

14
CONCLUSION
• We conclude that this process improves the bearing capacity of soil by
adding plastic strips to the soil.
• Plastic can be used as a stabilizing agent for soil but only when the plastic
is added in proper portions of plastic must be added which helps in
increasing the bearing capacity of the soil.
• Thus, using plastic as a soil stabilizer is an economical and gainful usage
because there is lack of good quality soil for various constructions.
