Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Do you have a student who cannot stay in his or her own seat?
Who gets distracted while doing class work?
Or distracts classmates due to not raising his or her hand when answering a
question?
ADHD Characteristics and Manifestation

 DSM-5 Criteria:
 Inattention to detail and careless mistakes
 Difficulty listening when spoken to
 Easily distracted and forgetful
 Inability to stay seated
 Frequent fidgeting
 Talking out of turn or excessively

 Manifestation:
 As early as 3 years old
 Before the age of 12
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

 Has your student recently been through a traumatic event or experience?


 Are they easily irritable or have outbursts of anger?
 Do they deny the event that took place?
PTSD Characteristics and Manifestation

 Characteristics:
 Nightmares
 Easily startled
 Irritability
 Fear or avoidance of something/someone

 Manifestation
 After a traumatic even occurs
 Symptoms occur for longer than a month
Anxiety

 Do you have a student that is afraid to be away from his or her mom and dad
when coming to school?
 Does your student constantly worry about the future?
 Does your student have intense fear social situations or something specific?

 Extreme fear of specific thing or situation
 Extreme worry about the future

 Medical conditions

 Lack of family or friend support
Substance Abuse

 How to identify substance abuse in students:


 Lack of interest in activities that once were enjoyable
 Change in friend groups
 Significant drop in grades

 Markers of living with substance abuse:


 Not showing up for school or showing up late
 Not completing homework
 Not getting parent signatures
 Not being well groomed
