School Counselor’s Role as a Consultant

 Consult with other professionals when ethical dilemmas arise


 Consult with community organizations who can provide outside resources for students
 Consult with teachers on 504 plans and accommodations for students in the classroom
 Consult with families on how to better support student and family needs
 Consult with school nurse or medical professional to better understand students’ diagnoses
 Consult with administration on how to effectively implement school counseling program
 Consult with students on counseling goals

Case Study:
 School counselor consults with school nurse regarding a student who has been diagnosed
with Encopresis and Enuresis
 School nurse can provide better insight on the medical diagnosis and can provide
recommendations on how to make accommodations
Consultant Scenario 2
Case Study:
 School counselor consults with parents after receiving a counseling referral for student
from a teacher
 Informing parents and getting consent for counseling services in required before seeing
student regularly
Consultant Scenario 3
Case Study:
 School counselor consults with teachers on incorporating a break schedule for students
 Will help students’ behavioral and emotional needs when there is too much stimulation in
the classroom
