scattered areas of Peru,
Argentina, Bolivia and
Chile. In our country it is
found mainly in rocky areas
with sparse vegetation from
Ancash to Tacna.
Andean cat feeding
It feeds on small and
medium-sized rodents
such as the vizcacha,
and the chinchilla,
among other rodents, as
well as aquatic and
terrestrial birds, eggs,
and reptiles.
Andean cat skills
This species is capable of jumping
distances of up to 1.5 meters, its
long and wide tail gives it
extraordinary balance, its fur
allows it great camouflage
capabilities, it is stealthy and can
run at great speed in short
stretches.
Why is the Andean cat in
danger of extinction?
This is because it has suffered the
loss and degradation of its habitat
due to extractive activities,
unregulated tourism and
overgrazing. In addition, hunting for
traditional or casual reasons has
affected their situation, as has the
population reduction of their prey or
the spread of diseases.
