Importance of Coral Reefs
1. They provide a habitat for many
marine animals.

2. They are important to the coastal


environment and provide sediment.

3. Great breeding grounds for young fish


because of the abundance of food and
shelter they provide.

4. They help to protect the coastline also,


as they break up or slow down wave
energy, to reduce wave erosion.

Threats to coral reefs

1. Fishing methods – such as dragging of nets,


use of poison and blast fishing, have all
reduced coral populations.

2. Silt run-off from the land damages reef


organisms.

3. Hurricanes damage branching corals.

Ways to protect coral reefs

1. Preventing tourists from walking on corals.

2. Educating the public on the importance of


coral reefs.

3. Preventing boats from anchoring over or


landing on coral reefs.

4. Practicing proper dredging methods.

5. Monitoring the build-up of sediment from


inland sources.
