PERSONAL SKILLS

 Personal skills are related to an


individual’s ability to take charge of
their lives through the use of their
knowledge, attitudes and skills. A
healthy mental well-being and
pleasant personality is a result of a
person equipped with positive
personal skills.
 Personal skills empower the
individual to look after
themselves, others and the
environment.
 Positive self-concept, being
able to refuse others, coping
with stress, time management,
positive thinking and setting
goals are personal skills that
most people need and want to
achieve.
 STRESS
- is a combination of stressor
(situation) and stress response
(reaction of mind and body).

- it is our body’s reaction to an


event that is perceived as
emotionally disturbing or
threatening.
SIGNS OF STRESS

Physiological
Headaches, chest pains, skin irritations, sweating, muscle
aches and pains, indigestion, stomach problems,
allergies, dry mouth, inability to sleep, frequent colds, ,
muscle tension, increased heart rate and blood pressure.
Mental and Emotional
Becoming suspicious and unhelpful, mind blanks, loss of
enthusiasm and sense of humor, becoming resentful, loss
of self-esteem, appetite changes, feeling withdrawn and
alone, poor memory and making mistakes, inability to
relax.
Behavioral
Accidents and clumsiness, talking and eating quickly,
interrupting conversations, procrastination, irrational
decisions, taking more time off work, being less
cooperative, consumption of alcohol or prescribed drugs,
grinding of teeth.
Philosophical
Hopelessness, questioning values, negative thoughts
about self and others.
STRESS MANAGEMENT

is not merely stress reduction


but the management of
situations that generate stress
to the individual.
 SANDOSENANG IWAS STRESS

SPIRITUALITY - join activities that


relax the mind and uplift the spirit.
Prayers are good not only for the
soul, but also for the body.

SCHEDULING- practice time


management.

SIESTA- find time to have a good


afternoon nap.
SPORTS - even if you do not intend
to join the Olympics or break world
records, just be involved in sports.

SYMPOSIUM - join seminars and


other educational workshops that
interests you and will improve you
personally and professionally.
SOCIALS - being with friends or
making friends is enjoyable.

STUDY- have a good study habit.

STRESS DEBRIEFING - talk to a


good friend or a Counselor about
your fears, aches and pains.
SELF-AWARENESS - As Socrates tell us
“Know thyself”, know your strengths and
weaknesses in order for you to do what is
best for you.

SCALES - know your IQ or submit


yourself to psychological testing
and see what aspect you can still
improve.

SENSATION - sauna, massage and


have some quiet time for yourself.
SPEAK TO ME - communication
is the key to build good
relationship. A good conversation
stimulates the brain.
How do personal skills relate to the
youth in drug abuse prevention?
Drug abuse by the youth is often
caused by their inability to cope with
social, personal or peer pressure.
Having a positive self concept, being
able to refuse others, coping with
stress, time management, thinking
positively and setting achievable goals
all contribute to a healthy and drug-
free lifestyle.
