INTRODUCTION
Muscles of facial expression are also known as Mimetic muscles.

→ Primary function – act as sphincter and dilators of the facial orifices.

→ Secondary function – facial expression

→ Development – from the mesenchyme of the second branchial arch , with its nerve supply – facial
nerve.

→ Only muscles that insert directly into the skin.

EXAMINATION OF FACIAL NERVE

→ FACIAL NERVE is examined by testing the following facial muscles

→ Frontalis :- Ask the patient to look upwards without moving his head and look for the normal horizontal wrinkles on
the forehead.

→ Dilators of mouth:- Showing the teeth

→ Orbicularis oculi:- Tight closure of eyes.

→ Buccinator:- Puffing the mouth and then blowing forcibly as in whistling.
