What is Photoshop?
• Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published
by Adobe Inc. for macOS and Windows.

• Photoshop can edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and
supports masks, alpha compositing, and several color models
including RGB, CMYK, spot color, and duotone.

• Its feature set can be expanded by plug-ins; programs developed and

distributed independently of Photoshop that run inside it and offer new
or enhanced features.
History
• Photoshop was developed in 1987 by brothers Thomas and John
Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems
Incorporated in 1988.

• Thomas Knoll began writing a program to display grayscale images on

a monochrome display.

• At the time Photoshop 1.0 was released, digital retouching on

dedicated high-end systems cost around $300 an hour for basic photo
retouching.
When you open photoshop you have two options : Open file or Create new document.
Tools
• Upon loading Photoshop, a sidebar with a
variety of tools appears to the left of the
screen.

• These tools typically fall under the categories

of : drawing, painting, measuring and
navigation, selection, typing, and retouching.

• Some tools contain a small triangle in the

bottom right of the toolbox icon.
Selection tools
• Selection tools are used to select all or any part of a
picture. Crop tool icon

• The crop tool can be used to select a particular area of an

image and discard the portions outside the chosen section.

• The move tool can be used to drag the entirety of a single

layer or more if they are selected.

the active layer.

retouch your photos, apply special
art effects...

edit the text and apply layer
commands to it.

• You can also change the orientation

(either horizontal or vertical) of a
text layer. Text tools
• The type size determines how large
the type appears in the image.
Extension
s
• There are 6 main formats in which to store images.

• TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. TIFF images create very large
file sizes. TIFF images are uncompressed and thus contain a lot of
detailed image data

• JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created this
standard for this type of image formatting. JPEG files are images that
have been compressed to store a lot of information in a small-size file.
• GIF stands for Graphic Interchange Format. This format compresses
images but, as different from JPEG, the compression is lossless.

• PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It’s used almost exclusively
for web images, never for print images.

• Raw image files contain data from a digital camera (usually). The files
are called raw because they haven’t been processed and therefore can’t
be edited or printed yet.

• PSD file is a layered image file used in Adobe PhotoShop. PSD, which
stands for Photoshop Document, is the default format that Photoshop
uses for saving data.
