Why do we use quotations in
written work?
They can be valuable:
 when the original words express an idea in a
distinctive way
 when the original is more concise than your summary
could be
 when the original version is well known
Signal Phrases in APA Style

When you choose to use quotations, make sure that they are integrated smoothly into the text of your paper.

The signal phrase is an essential part of the set-up for both direct quotations and paraphrased citations.

The signal phrase should: •Argued


(1) let the reader know that you are about to cite from an •Asserted
