THE EARLIEST PEOPLE :
The first ‘Britons’ were an ethnically
mixed group
They were descendants of the first homo
sapiens who arrived in Europe 30000-
40000 years ago
They were huter-gatherers, following the
retraiting ice of the Ice Age northwards.
THE CELTS :

WHO WERE THEY ?


THE CELTS:
During the Iron Age (1000 to 500 BC),
the celts were the main inhabitants
The celts had probably been arriving from
continental Europe
They could work with iron, they were
fairly advanced technologically
The celts were seccesseful farmers who
used new farming techniques(iron
ploughs).
Celtic society had a tribal organization.
They were organised into tribes and tribal
chiefs were chosen from each familly or
tribe.
They were warriors ; Celtic warrior was
higher than Romans, muscule physique,
and they were brave and skilled fighters.
Religion: they worshipped a number of
gods.
THE ROMANS:
 About 200 BC Roman’s influence began to
extend into western and Europe and Britain
When the Romans conquered Gaul, the
British Celtes helped the Celts of Gaul
The Romans invaded Britain so that they
could use British food for the Roman army
in Gaul
In AD 43 the Romans conquered England.
They could never conquer scotland.
THE ANGLO-SAXONS :
•They came and sittled in England, with the
withdrawal of the romans in the 5th centruy.
•Anglo-saxons are Germanic tribes who came from
Europeon continent
•They were the first who established kingdoms in
England : Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, Kent and
East Anglia. 
•Each group of Anglo-Saxon settlers had a leader or
war-chief. A strong and successful leader became
'cyning', the Anglo-Saxon word for 'king'. Each king
ruled a kingdom and led a small army.
Britain expanded as an agricultural and
commercial nation from the eleventh
century, and also developed
manufacturing industries. Because the
agriculture expansion started with the
saxons who cleared the forests, cultivated
crops and introduced inventions and
equipment that remained in use for
centuries .
THE VIKINGS :
The vikings are Scandinavian invaders. They defeated
Saxon England.

They took control of several Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.


Eventually the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings made a
peace agreement, but the fighting continued for many
years.

The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons divided up Britain with


the Anglo-Saxons living mainly in the west and the
Vikings in an area to the east, known as the Danelaw.
THE NORMANS :
 The Normans invaded England in 1066
came from Normandy in Northern France
In 1066, Willian, the Duke of Normandy, took
advantage of the English succession crisis
to invade .With an army of Norman
followers and mercenaries, he defeated Harold
at the battle of Hastings and rapidly occupied
the south of England.
IMMIGRATION & POPULATION
MOVEMENTS IN THE 20th CENTRUY :
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
simultaneously saw unprecedented movement of
populations, and increasing restriction on those
migrations.
In the early years of the centruy, Jews and Poles
escaped persecution in Eastern Europe and settled
in the East End of London, which has been a
traditional area of immigrant concentration .
Suffrence of some newcomers from descrimination
the population shifts have occurred because of the
economic and employment changes.
