Maria Corazon "Cory" Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino was
a Filipina politician who served as the 11th president of the
Philippines from 1986 to 1992
Born: January 25, 1933, Paniqui, Tarlac
Died: August 1, 2009, Makati
Corazon Cojuangco was born into a wealthy,
politically prominent family based in Tarlac
province, north of Manila.

•Corazon Aquino was married to Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., who
was one of the most prominent critics of President Marcos.

•Benigno was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines in August


1983.This event galvanized opposition to the Marcos government.

•When Ferdinand E. Marcos unexpectedly called for presidential elections


in February 1986, Corazon Aquino became the unified opposition’s
presidential candidate.

•After the election held on February 7, 1986, the Batasang Pambansa proclaimed Marcos
and his running mate Arturo Tolentino as the winners, which prompted allegations of
electoral fraud and Aquino's call for massive civil disobedience actions.
•Subsequently, the People Power Revolution, a non-violent mass demonstration
movement, took place from February 22 to 25.
•.The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution gathered millions of
Filipinos from all walks of life to march along Epifanio de los
Santos Avenue (EDSA), the main artery of Metro Manila, to end
the dictatorship of President Ferdinand E. Marcos and begin a new
era marked by true freedom and democracy.

The People Power Revolution, along with defections from the Armed
Forces of the Philippines and support from the Philippine Catholic
Church, successfully ousted Marcos and secured Aquino's accession
to the presidency on February 25, 1986.

Revolution, which ended the two-decade rule of President Ferdinand
Marcos and led to the establishment of the current democratic Fifth

CONSTITUTION
Approved by the 1986 Constitutional Commission on October 12, 1986,
the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines was presented to
President Corazon C. Aquino on October 15, 1986. It was ratified on
February 2, 1987 by a plebiscite. It was proclaimed in force on February
11, 1987.

The 1987 Constitution established a bill of rights and a three-branch
government consisting of the executive department, the legislative
department, and the judicial department.

by Ferdinand Marcos, his immediate family, relatives,

• During her Presidency, one of her focus was on paying off


the country's then 26 billion dollar debt. Although it was not a
popular decision, for Aquino, paying off these debts would
restore the Philippines' good reputation among leaders around
the world.
CONTRIBUTIONS

• Projects related to the agrarian sector became the legacy of the


Aquino Administration. In 1988, with the support of Tita Cory,
Congress passed Republic Act Number 6657 or the Comprehensive
Agrarian Reform Law which allowed the distribution of agricultural
lands to "tenant-farmers" from their owners.
CONTRIBUTIONS

Reform Program)
It sought to redistribute land not only to farmers and
farm workers but also to other landless poor. Guided by
the principle of social justice, it recognized the right of
landowners to just compensation and provided a retention
limit of 5 hectare.
