PRAYER
Lord God, thank you for the gift of life that you
shared  us today. Thank for everything in providing
us your untiring  love, good health and protection.
1
Help us to focus our hearts  and minds for this
moment that we could be able to tackle  all the
lessons discussed by our teacher. Inspire us by
your  Holy Spirit as we listen and write. Guide us by
your eternal  light as we discover more about the
world around us. We ask all this in the name of
Jesus, Amen.

At the end of the lesson the
student must be able to:
• Familiarize numbers that
are perfect squares; and
• Solve quadratic equations
by extracting square
roots
Roots or Solution
In the quadratic equation
ax² + bx + c = 0
the values of x that will satisfy the
quadratic equation are called the
roots or solutions of the quadratic
equation.
• If b = 0, then the quadratic equation
is in the form ax² + c = 0.
• If a = 1 and b = o, then the
quadratic
equation is in the form x² + c = 0.
• Equations that can be written in the
form ax² = c and x² = c, where c is
any nonnegative real number, can be
solved by extracting the square root.
Example 1
Solve for the roots of the given equations.
a. x² - 4 = 0 x² - 4 = 0
x² = 4
x = ± √4
X = ±2
x = 2 or x = -2
Example 2
Solve for the roots of the given equations.
a. x² + 49 = 0 x² + 49 = 0
x² = -49
The equation has no real solutions
or roots. There is no real number
when squared gives negative.
Always remember
 If the quadratic equation is in the form
x² = c, where c is non-negative real
number, the roots of the equation are
±√c.
 If the quadratic equation is in the form
x² = c, where c is negative integer, the
equation has no real solutions or roots
Example 3
Solve 5n² - 50 = 0
5n² = 50 • Divide both sides of
the equation by the
5n²/5 = 50/5 coefficient of the
n² = 10 quadratic term.
• The roots of the
n² = ±√10 equation are √10
n= √10 or n= -√10 and -√10.
Example 4
Solve (x - 5)² - 100 = 0
(x - 5)² = 100
• Apply the square
x - 5 = ±√100 root property
x – 5 = ±10
Example 5
Solve (x - 2)² - 12 = 0
(x - 2)² = 12
• Apply the square
x - 2 = ±√12 root property
x – 2 = ±√4 * √3
