Current Situation of the
Forest and Mountains
The current situation of the forests and mountains in the Philippines is
very poor and the forest cover of the Philippines ranks in one of the 11
poorest countries. It has a per capita forest cover of only about 0.085
ha. The condition was very poor in the past but since 2010 it has
improved a little and the forests are expected to increase to 19 percent
of total land area by the government support. Other than the
environmental and economic factors, deforestation is also a great
mean for this condition. The irresponsible logging practices is also
responsible for the accelerated deforestation. Logging to the primary
forests for slash-and-burn farming, agricultural expansion, and illegal
logging activities is the main reason for this condition. Other than this
government policies of "land for the landless" has also accelerated
this.
Places in the Philippines where
Illegal Logging is Prevalent
• Illegal logging in provinces under the Mindoro, Marinduque,
Romblon, and Palawan (MIMAROPA) region continue even
amid the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, as
environment authorities seized over 1,100 board feet of lumber,
mostly from banned tree species, during the said period.

• In the first two weeks of the Luzon lockdown, which covers

MIMAROPA, enforcers seized abandoned lumber in separate
locations in the region. The lumber was believed to be illegally
cut while most people were staying at home, observing extreme
measures to fight COVID-19. No violators, however, were
captured.
