DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

WHAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS ?
• Domestic violence can be broadly defined as a pattern of abusive
behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as
marriage dating family friends or cohabitation.
• It is the establishment of control and fear in a relationship through
violence and other forms of abuse.
• The violence may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and threats.
• The abuser tortures and controls the victims by calculated threats,
intimidation, and physical violence.
• In most cases, the victims are women and children in the home.
HISTORY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
• Domestic violence is not a new phenomenon.
• It was prevalent in the following periods:-
* ROMAN EMPIRE
* THE EARLY CATHOLIC CHURCH
* THE PURITANS
* A RELIC OF BARBARIANS
TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
• Physical Abuse – means any act or conduct which
is of such a nature as to cause bodily harm, or
danger to life, limb or health or impair the health or
development of the aggrieved party and includes
assault.
• Sexual Abuse- includes any conduct of sexual
nature that abuses, humiliates, degrades, or
otherwise violates the dignity of women.
• Emotional Abuse – includes insults, ridicule,
humiliation, name-calling and insults that abuses,
humiliate, degrade, or otherwise violate the dignity
of women.
POSITION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN INDIA

• There were 1.3 million deaths of children under 5 in India in 2013—accounting


for one-fifth of global child mortality. While access to health care plays a large part
in these individual tragedies, other factors, such as domestic violence, also have a
significant impact.
• A new research has shown that nearly 1 in 10 child deaths under the age of 1 in
India can be attributed to domestic violence against the mother during the
marriage.
• A total of 3582 cases of domestic violence were reported in India .
Causes & Effect of Domestic Violence
• Feeling of inferiority -in this era women are educated , independent and strong . Some
men with low mentality feel jealous about women’s superiority in education or
economically . They can’t bear the feeling of inferiority and starts abusing women in
house to show that how superior they are
• Dominant belive : Most men belive that women are not equal to men . They belive that
they have the right to control the wives or partners . They can behave in any way they
want.
• Situational factors : When a child grows up seeing in a family where abuse takes
place , the child is more likely to behave in that particular manner when he grows up.
• Alcohol & Drugs : Consuming alcohol and drugs one can lose his sound mind and
become aggressive . Men after consuming liquor becomes violent against their partners
and abuse them in physical or sexual form . ( Though it is a vise-versa condition ) for
women too.

Conclusion
• Government Of India is spending crores of rupees for finding a one-stop
solution for women, various campaigns and awareness caps are organized
regularly for dealing with it, but still not able to get the desired results.
• Strictness has been seen in cases of Domestic violence during its trial and
the government is trying the best possible to eradicate this from society by
enacting severe punishments which will act as a deterrent for others.
