CARBON FOOTPRINT.

SINGAPORE
Prepared by Denkova Ira
Singapore ranks 126th of 142 countries in terms of CO2 emissions
The CO2 emissions produced this year - about the same level as in 2002 - are still much greater than can
be absorbed by the world’s forests, oceans or soils, meaning CO2 levels in the atmosphere are still
expected to keep increasing.
How much CO2 does one person emit?

The website What is My Carbon Footprint showed

that the average Singaporean generates an
alarming 9000kg of carbon emissions per
year, more than twice the world's average, and
more than 4 times the target to maintain a
sustainable footprint. This compounds existing
fears that climate change will impact Singapore
more greatly than other nations – the
Meterological Service Singapore had previously
shared findings that Singapore is heating up twice
as fast as the rest of the world.
By sector, emissions from surface
transport, such as cars, trucks and
buses, fell by roughly half at the
peak of the first Covid-19 wave in
April.

Emissions in Singapore are

dominated by the energy and
industry sectors. The carbon tax,
targeting upstream emissions from
large emitters, at appropriate level
could encourage more renewable
energy in place of fossil fuel energy
by adding a price for the emitted
carbon. However, higher tax levels
are likely needed to encourage a
significant shift to decarbonizing
the power sector.
Singapore
is the first
country in
Southeast
Asia to
introduce
a carbon
price.
Singapore has a goal of reaching climate
neutrality no later than 2060.
