Epiphany: God’s
Manifestations of Jesus
as Savior of the World
Let us pray!
(Sign of the cross)
Send, we beseech You, Almighty
God, Your Holy Spirit into our
hearts, That He may rule and
direct us according to Your will,
Comfort us in all our
temptations and afflictions,
Defend us from all error, And
lead us into all Truth;
That we, being steadfast in the
faith, May increase in love and in
all good works, And in the end
obtain everlasting life:
Through Jesus Christ, Your Son,
our Lord. Amen.
The Gospel will be read twice.
After reading it for the first time the students
may share their striking words at the comment
section, during the silence.
After reading it for the second time silence will
follow for personal prayer and contemplation,
then sharing of reflection shall follow.

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

ST. MATTHEW
2:1-12
Glory to you,
O
Lord.
1
When Jesus was born in

Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of

King Herod, behold, magi from the

east arrived in Jerusalem,  2 saying,

“Where is the newborn king of the

Jews?
We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him
homage.”  3 When King Herod
heard this, he was greatly
troubled, and all Jerusalem
with him.  4 Assembling all the
chief priests and the
scribes of the people,
he inquired of them
where the Messiah was
to be born. 5 They said
to him, “In Bethlehem
of Judea, for thus it
has been written
through the prophet:
6‘And you, Bethlehem, land
of Judah, are by no means
least among the rulers of
Judah;
since from you shall come
a ruler, who is to shepherd
my people Israel.’”
7
Then Herod called the magi
secretly and ascertained from
them the time of the star’s
appearance.  He sent them to
8

Bethlehem and said, “Go and

search diligently for the child.
When you have found him,
bring me word, that I too may go
and do him homage.”
9
After their audience with the
king they set out. And behold,
the star that they had seen at
its rising preceded them, until
it came and stopped over the
place where the child
was.   They were overjoyed at
10

seeing the star,

11
and on entering the
house they saw the
child with Mary his
mother. They prostrated
themselves and did him
homage. Then they
opened their treasures
and offered him gifts of
gold, frankincense, and
myrrh.
12
And having been
warned in a dream
not to return to
Herod, they
departed for their
country by another
way.

What is the LORD trying to TELL you?
Si Hesus ay ipinanganak sa
Betlehem ng Judea noong
kapanahunan ni Haring
Herodes. Dumating naman sa
Jerusalem ang ilang Pantas
mula sa Silangan at
nagtanung-tanong doon:
“Nasaan ang ipinanganak
na Hari ng mga Judio?
Nakita namin sa Silangan
ang kanyang tala at
naparito kami upang
sambahin siya.”
Nang mabalitaan ito ni Haring
Herodes, siya’y naligalig, gayun
din ang buong Jerusalem. Kaya’t
tinipon niya ang lahat ng punong
saserdote at mga eskriba sa Israel
at itinanong sa kanila kung saan
ipinanganak ang Mesiyas.
“Sa Betlehem po ng Judea,” tugon
nila. “Ganito ang sinulat ng
propeta:
‘At ikaw, Betlehem, sa lupain ng
Juda, ay hindi nga huli sa mga
pangunahing bayan ng Juda.
Sapagkat sa iyo lilitaw ang isang
pinuno na mamamahala sa aking
bayang Israel.’”
Nang mabatid ito, lihim na
ipinatawag ni Herodes ang
mga Pantas at itinanong kung
kailan lumitaw ang mga tala.
At pinalakad niya sila
patungong Betlehem matapos
pabilinan ng ganito:
“Humayo kayo at inyong
hanaping mabuti ang sanggol.
Kapag inyong natagpuan,
ibalita agad ninyo sa akin
upang ako may makasamba
sa kanya.” At lumakad na nga
ang mga Pantas.
Muli silang pinangunahan ng
talang nakita nila sa silangan
hanggang sa sumapit ito sa tapat
ng kinaroroonan ng bata. Gayun
na lamang ang galak ng mga
Pantas nang makita ang tala!
Pagpasok sa bahay, nakita nila
ang bata sa piling ng kanyang
inang si Maria.
Lumapit sila at nagpatirapa
at sinamba ang bata.
Binuksan nila ang kanilang
mga sisidlan at inihandog
sa kanya ang dala nilang
ginto, kamanyang at mira.
Nang sila’y pabalik na,
sinabi sa kanila ng Diyos sa
pamamagitan ng panaginip
na huwag na silang babalik
kay Herodes. Kaya, nag-iba
na sila ng daan pauwi.
The Word
of the Lord,
Praise to you,
Lord Jesus Christ.

Catechism (background)
The Twinkling Star of Bethlehem
Matthew employed symbols in writing the
story of the Magi’s visit to Jesus. One
beautiful symbol is the Star of Bethlehem
that the Magi discovered, considered as a
sign from the heavens, and followed until
they reached the house of the infant born to
be the ruler of Israel (Mic 5:1).
Catechism (background)
The Twinkling Star of Bethlehem
- The star was the guide of the Magi in
their long and arduous journey to
Bethlehem.
- The star is a symbol of faith. Like the star
that enlightened the Magi, faith is the
light that guides us in our journey on
earth to the Lord.
Catechism (background)
The Gifts (of gold, frankincense, and myrrh)
Myrrh signified the humanity of the
Messiah such that he would die and be
buried (commonly used to embalm bodies)
Gold signified that he would be a king of a
kingdom that has no end.
Incense signified that the Messiah is God
who came to make known Himself in Judea
and to those who never looked for Him.
Catechism (background)
The Magi (three wise men/kings)
The story of the Magi is about the gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. The Magi’s act of
homage fulfilled the prophecies regarding the
Messiah to whom the nations would give their
wealth, such as gold and frankincense from
Sheba. The kings of Tarshish, the Isles, Arabia
would offer gifts, bring tribute and serve the
Messiah (Ps 72:10-11).
1. on entering the house they saw the child with
Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves
and did him homage.

2. “Nasaan ang ipinanganak na Hari ng mga Judio?

Nakita namin sa Silangan ang kanyang tala at
naparito kami upang sambahin siya.”
3 Learning from the Gospel
Epiphany: truth and celebration of faith
- Epiphany means “manifestation.”
- On this day, we recall and celebrate that God
the Father revealed to the entire world His
Son as a baby boy whose name is Jesus and
was born in Bethlehem.
3 Learning from the Gospel
Epiphany is not only about gift-giving.
- It is a celebration of God’s love for the
whole world.
- We are to believe and confirm this
truth and also to show our
appreciation and live it as Christians.
3 Learning from the Gospel
Epiphany in the Holy Mass
- we are also experiencing the mystery
or the truth of the Epiphany.
In every Eucharistic celebration Jesus
manifests Himself and shows Himself as
our Lord and Savior.
3 Learning from the Gospel
Epiphany in the Holy Mass
Like the Magi, who brought their gifts of
myrrh, gold, and frankincense, we bring
to Mass our gift of our whole self, our
heart and body, expressed in our
active participation in the liturgy.
3 Learning from the Gospel
Epiphany in the Holy Mass
Like the Magi who returned home at the
end of their visit “by another route” after
being blessed by their adoration of the
Infant Jesus, we go back home
after the Eucharist “in the peace
of Christ Jesus.”

Words to Ponder:
To be a Star of Bethlehem
“The star is always in love with God. To
remain in love, one must remain in
communication in God.”
It means to be a star one must always at
tune with God in prayer….
CLOSING PRAYER
Mary, our Mother, show Jesus to us as
you showed Him to the Magi who visited
the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Mary,
Virgin of the Magnificat, help us to bring
joy to the world and as you did in Cana,
encourage us young people to do only
what Jesus Your Son tells us. Mary, turn
your gaze upon us so that we may become
the fruitful
soil of the Church. Amen.
