FACTORING

Factoring the difference of two Squares

Let’s start our lesson with a basic question:
What is Factoring?

 In Mathematics, factorization or factoring is defined as the breaking

or decomposition of an entity (for example a number, a matrix, or a
polynomial) into a product of another entity, or factors, which when
multiplied together give the original number or a matrix.
 Factoring is also the reverse of multiplication. It is the process of
finding the factors of an expression. We find the simplest (prime)
factors of the expression.
 There are different methods in factoring
expression, such as; Factoring the Greatest
Monomial Factor, Factoring the Difference of
Two Squares, Factoring the sum or Difference
of Two Cubes, Factoring a Perfect Square
Trinomial, Factoring by Grouping, and
Factoring by Trial and Error.
Factoring the Difference of Two Squares
FORMULA: a²-b²=(a+b)(a-b)

STEPS:
Step 1: It is important to know the perfect square numbers.
Step 2: Remember we are factoring the difference of two squares so from
the key word difference the operation must be subtraction.
Step 3: Check if the given is a perfect square then you can start factoring it out if you
confirmed that it is a perfect square, take note that a perfect square is the product of
a rational number multiplied by itself.
Step 4: By factoring it out you must have a 2 parenthesis with + and – operations.
EXAMLE 1:

 25-16=
ANSWER 1:
 25-16
=-
=(5x+4)(5x-4)
EXAMPLE 2:

 -36=
ANSWER 2:

 -36
=(-
=(m+6)(m-6)
EXAMPLE 3:

 -49=
ANSWER 3:
 -49
=(4-(7
=(4x+7y)(4x-7y)
Now let’s have an activity, answer the
following.
1. -25
2. -16
3. 169-81
4. 25-9
5. 64-121
1.+5)(-5)
2.(y+4)(y-4
3.(13x+9c)(13x-9c)
4.(5x+3)(5x-3)
5.(8+11)(8-11)
