FAMILY AND FAMILY TYPES

FAMILY
A social group characterized by common
residence, economic cooperation, reproduction.
It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of
whom maintain sexual relationship and one or
more children, owned or adopted of the sexually
cohabiting adults.

CLASSIFICATION OF FAMILY
A. According to organization, structure, and
membership

• Nuclear family- also called as primary or elementary family.


Consist of father, mother and children.
• Extended family- consist of two or more nuclear family.
1. Conjugal family- the marriage bond is important
2. Consanguineal family- blood relatives are more important than spouses.
B. According to place of residence

• Patrilocal family- requires the newlywed couple to live with or near the
groom’s parents.
• Matrilocal family- requires the newlywed couple to live on near the bride’s
parents.
• Bilocal family- provides the newlywed couple the freedom to select where
to reside either near the groom’s or bride’s parents.
• Neolocal family- permits the newlywed to reside independently of the
parents. They can decide on their residence is concerned.
• Avanlocal family- prescribes the newlywed couple to reside near the
maternal uncle of the groom.
C. According to descent

• Patrilineal descent affiliates a person with a group of kinsmen


related to them through the father.
• Matrilineal descent affiliates a person with a group of kinsmen
related to them through the mother.
D. According to authority

• Patriarchal family- is one which authority is vested in the


oldest male member, often the father, or grandfather or in the
absence of parents, on the oldest male member.
• Matriarchal family- is one in which authority is vested in
the elder of the mothers kin.
• Equalitarian family- is one where the husband and wife
exercise a more or less equal amount of authority.
• Matricentric family- one where the absence of the father
who maybe working gives the mother a dominant position in
the family.
E. According to terms of marriage
 Monogamy- only one marriage for a life time.
 Polygamy-plural marriage
Polygyny- men married to one or more woman at the same
time.
Polyandry-women married to one or more man at the same time.
