Jesus and the

Feast of
Tabernacle
John 7
John 1:1-5
7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not
want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish
leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But
when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3
Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to
Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works
you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public
figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these
things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his
own brothers did not believe in him.
Observation on John 7:1-5
 Jewish Festival of Tabernacle – 1/3 major festival in Israel
which commemorate the provision of God to the Israelites while
they where in the wilderness. He showed fire and clouds to
guide them and Manna, Quail and Eggs to feed them.
 Jesus was being tried to be killed because of the miracles and
the hard teaching He provides the people
 Worse is that His very brothers and sister did not believe in him.
His siblings even mock him that he must let the people see his
miracles and wonders.
1st things we must conquer in
our walk with Christ
DISBELIEF – believing in Christ
may come with struggle as Jesus
also experience disbelief with his
fellow brothers. So when we
experience disbelief from others
it is ok since the Lord himself
also experience as such
Our Christian Life does
not assure us that people
will accept us but rather
our brothers might even
mock us because of our
faith
John 1:6-9
6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet
here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot
hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its
works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b]
going up to this festival, because my time has not yet
fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in
Galilee.
Observation on John 7:1-5
 Jesus was trying to tell his brothers that His time is not yet to
come. Meaning His planned death on the cross is not yet at
hand.
 The World in this context is either
 People who opposes God
 The Human System opposed to God’s purposes
 Why Jesus told us that his brothers are of the world?
 His brothers did not believe in the Lord Jesus and the world
cannot hate them due to this
 The Lord Jesus declare the evil of this world and we need him for
the forgiveness of sins
2nd things we must conquer in
our walk with Christ
DISASSOCIATE with the world –
believing in Christ, we must
disassociate with the world. Like
Jesus we are bound to be hated
by the world because we testify
and do not tolerate the works of
evil
John 1:10-13
10 However, after his brothers had left for the
festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11
Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching
for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”
12 Among the crowds there was widespread
whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good
man.”
Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” 13 But
no one would say anything publicly about him for fear
of the leaders.
Observation
 Jesus was still obedient to the commandment of God in the Old
Testament. Even though Jesus has an imminent danger for him
to go still he obey God’s word in the Old Testament
 Jewish authority knows that it is impossible for Jesus not to go to the
feast that is why they are looking for him in the temple to be
arrested and be killed
 Now people are beginning to have a discourse on who Jesus is. It
seems that people are now having different points of view.
 But there is a truth about people who believe in Jesus. People are
afraid of the Jewish Authority because of discrimination. So rather
than telling publicly, they rather whisper and ask each other in small
voices
2nd things we must conquer in
our walk with Christ
DIVISION – believing in Christ, we
are also to expect division
among some of our known
friends. Many times, persecution
are being given to those who
believe and join the Lord Jesus.
We are to expect this things to
John 1:14-19
14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to
the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews there
were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning
without having been taught?”
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes
from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do
the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes
from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever
speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he
who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of
truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses
given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are
you trying to kill me?”
Observation
 Jesus went halfway through because people are now in massive
numbers and it was a golden opportunity to preach
 Jesus was always teaching and proclaiming the Kingdom of God
in the temple courts that is why people are amazed by His word
and asked if where Jesus knew all this things.
 They saw Jesus is not taught by the Pharisees nor the Scribes
and yet His teachings are amazing
 Jesus’ teaching comes from God. Why? Because he does not
personally gain His Glory but rather seek the Glory of God.
 Pharisees during those times seek their personal glory through
obedience of the law. Why?
 Jesus rebuke them because of their plan murder of the Lord
Jesus
To do the will of God is
to obey and believe in
the Lord Jesus.
You will see true Servant
of God by their action.
They do not give glory to
themselves but they give
the Glory to God
John 7:20-24
20 “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is
trying to kill you?”

21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all
amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision
(though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the
patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a
boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of
Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for
healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging
by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
Observation
 Because he told the crowd about the Pharisees plan of murdering Jesus,
the crowd taught Jesus was delusional because He proclaim to the crowd,
Pharisees are trying to kill him.
 That is why they told Jesus that He was demon possess.
 The Pharisees congratulate themselves as the recipients of God’s law and
yet they are the one breaking the law. Why? They tried to kill the Lord
Jesus
 Now Jesus explain further the reason why it is OK to heal on a Sabbath.
Pharisees tried to make the law super hard to obey. On Sabbath one
cannot do anything to even to a point of healing the sick. But on Sabbath,
one can be circumcise. One cannot travel from one place to another, nor
pick up anything, nor find food for you and your family. To show an act of
mercy is more valuable than to omit to do good works during Sabbath
 Jewish tradition 8 day after birth, boys are circumcise but in Muslim
tradition during the 13th year of the boy’s age, He must be circumcise
John 7:25-30
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t
this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly,
and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really
concluded that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where this man is
from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you
know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own
authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I
know him because I am from him and he sent me.”
30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,
because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd
believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform
more signs than this man?”
Observation
 Now people realized that Jesus was referring to the Pharisees and yet
they see no Temple Guards are capturing him. They thought that the
Pharisees have soon realized that Jesus is now the Messiah. But
according to the Old Testament the Messiah comes from the Line of
David and Jesus was thought to be from Galilee.
 So the people are torn between two opinion about Jesus.
 The temple Guard now tried to sieze Jesus because of his claim that
He is the Messiah. Why is being the Messiah during the time of Rome
very controversial?
 It brings threat
 Messiah is a short word as a Saviour. People see the Messiah as a person who
will save the people from the clutches of Roome
 Pharisees was envious because they thought they are the one who control the
people about the law given to them by Moses
Who is Jesus? Best answer?
Simon Peter said, “You are the
16

Christ, the Son of the living God.”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are

the Messiah, the Son of the living
God.”
17 Jesus said to him, “Simon, son of
Jonah, you are happy because you did not
learn this from man. My Father in heaven
has shown you this.
18 “And I tell you that you are Peter. On
this rock I will build My church. The
powers of hell will not be able to have
power over My church. 19 I will give you
the keys of the holy nation of heaven.
John 7:32-35
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him.
Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest
him.
33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going
to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find
me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go
that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered
among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when
he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I
am, you cannot come’?”
Observation
 Now the Pharisees are afraid because of the people whispering and
asking if Jesus is the Messiah.
 But now Jesus predicted the death on the cross. He said that He will
go to the Father and never to return again. Still people are thinking
in a physical manner. Why? They though Jesus will go to other place
to establish religion there. People are very intrigue with Jesus’
declaration
John 7:37-44
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a
loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38
Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will
flow from within them.”[c] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those
who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit
had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is
the Prophet.”
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does
not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants
and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people
were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no
one laid a hand on him.
Why does the Gospel explain that Jesus
must come from the line of David
2 Samuel 7:12 - 12 When your days are over and you rest with your
ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own
flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.

Psalm 89:3-4 - You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen

one, I have sworn to David my servant, 4 ‘I will establish your line
forever and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[a]

Micah 5:2 - “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small
among the clans[a] of Judah, out of you will come for me one who
will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient
times.”
Observation
 Now Jesus declare for people to go to in Him. When he said let any
one who is thirsty come to me and drink. What he meant was anyone
who is thirsty of what?
 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they shall be
filled.
 Thirsty for righteousness – come to Jesus and drink / believe, river of
living water will flow within them.
 whom those who believed in
By this he meant the Spirit,
him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not
been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
 Once people believe in him rivers of living water, HOLY SPIRIT – a
river living water, abundant supply, will flow. That even those who
have believed can make other believe that can make other people
also believe
John 7:37-44
45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the
Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47 “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. 48
“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But
this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their
own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first
hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will
find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
Observation
 The temple guard are so afraid of the people. Because the people can
stone the guards because of them trying to arrest Jesus during the
Feast of Tabernacle and they are amazed how Jesus talk to the
people, with authority
 Now the Pharisees sees that only them can understand the law and
the people cannot. Self righteous attitude
 Nicodemus, Man who questioned about the Born Again Experience,
questioned the Pharisees about the notice ruling
 They reasoned that in Galilee no prophet can be mold.
