ACT DESCRIPTION

• English (75 questions/45 minutes)


• Mathematics (60 questions/60 minutes)
• Reading (40 questions/35 minutes)
• Science (40 questions/35 minutes)
• Optional- Writing (1 prompt/40 minutes)
• Take ACT with Writing at least once. Check to see if
your colleges need it.
ACT Facts
• ACT Perfect Score – 36
• Recommendations:
• Take it more than once!
• You are allowed to send your scores for free to four schools when you register
to take the ACT. This is a gamble...
• To be considered for Illinois State Scholar, you MUST take the test
between August and June of your junior year.
ACT Test Taking Tips

• Getting 2 more questions right in Math & English = 1 point


increase in subscores
• Getting 2 more questions right in Science & Reading = 2 point
increase in subscores
• Answer every question - Select ONE answer for every question
• There is no penalty for guessing
• Periodically check to make sure you’re bubbling in the Scantron
correctly
• Go with your first answer choice
ACT PREPARATION

• On average, students score about 2 pts. higher as a result of


taking professional prep classes.
• Academic Approach
• Twelve week course starting in January on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm
at Brother Rice.
• Also a virtual option on Sunday afternoons.
• Free to Chicago residents.

• Eight week class starting in January on Wednesday nights from 6:30-
8:30pm at Brother Rice
• Practice tests and tips to best take the test.

Naviance

1. Log on to www.brotherrice.org/counseling.
2. Click on Naviance in the middle of the page.
3. Type “60655” as the zip code, click on Brother Rice, then click
Student.
4. Log in with your BR email and password.
5. This is the main page of Naviance.
6. If you aren’t sure of schools you’d like apply to, use SuperMatch.
7. If you know of schools you’d like to apply to, you can search for
them in the search bar.
8. If you are unsure of what you want to major in, take a look at
your career results from last year.

back of the sheet for the trades or military branches you are
considering. You can use Google to find the requested
information.
