Secular Music of Luzon
LEARNING GOALS AND STANDARDS
The learners identify the musical characteristics of
representative music selections from the lowlands of Luzon
after listening;

The learners sing folksongs from the lowlands of Luzon;

The learners support the preservation of secular music


without compromising the Christian beliefs.
Introduction

Philippine secular music served as good vehicle not


only for entertainment, but also for other significant
social functions and purposes.
SECULAR MUSIC

Secular music is non-religious music. Secular means


being separate from religion.
FOLK SONG

Folk song is a vocal traditional music of the


Filipinos. It expresses the people’s everyday
activities, customs, and beliefs which are put
together as music.

• Harana
• Balitaw
• Kumintang
• Polka
HARANA

• Harana – a Filipino word for serenade, is a


traditional practice of courtship in which a young
man woos a maiden through a song.
BALITAW

• Balitaw – is a type of folk song originating in the


Visayas islands of the Philippines. It is a form of
dialogue or debate in song, in which a man and a
woman compete at improvising romantic verses.
KUMINTANG

• Kumintang – it is a war song that became


famous for the Batanguenos. It was a
kundiman that gave inspiration among
Filipinos who were involved in the
continuing fight for freedom.
JOCELYNANG BALIWAG

• Known as the “Kundiman ng


Himagsikan” was most
popular during the revolution
of 1896.
POLKA

• Polka – is a type of dance written in


duple time. It is the national dance of the
Czech Republic.
ART MUSIC

• Art music - is music considered to be of


high aesthetic value. It typically implies
advanced structural and theoretical
considerations or a written musical
tradition.
KUNDIMAN

• Kundiman – is a traditional Filipino song


that expresses the lofty sentiment of love
and even heroism, in a passionate but
melancholic.
