UNSUSTAINABLE PATTERNS OF PRODUCTION
AND CONSUMPTION

QUESTION: DO YOU AGREE THAT--

UNSUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION – THE MOTHER OF ALL
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES?
UNSUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION – THE MOTHER OF
ALL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES?

Answer: yes
Consumption of products and services impacts the environment
in many different ways. For example, the things we buy
contribute, directly or indirectly through the product lifecycle,
to climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and resource
depletion in the different countries and other regions.
THAT IS WHY---

•Maintaining sustainable consumption and

production patterns in society are important
aspirations included in the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
What do you mean by unsustainable
development?

•Unsustainable development occurs when present progress is at

the expense of future generations. For example, irresponsible
planning and environmental degradation through exploitation
of resources generates waste and pollution that damages
ecosystems. Such practices are not sustainable in the long term.
What are the effects of unsustainable
development?

•Global warming, destruction of the ozone shield, acidification

of land and water, desertification and soil loss, deforestation
and forest decline, diminishing productivity of land and waters,
and extinction of species and populations, demonstrate that
human demand is exceeding environmental support capacities.
What are examples of unsustainable practices?

•5 Unsustainable Activities We Should Start Phasing Out Today

•Wasting Food and Water. Nutritious food and clean water make up the cornerstone of
human survival. ...
•Buying One-Use Plastics. ...
•Depending on Fossil Fuels. ...
•Overpopulating Cities. ...
•Contaminating Resources.
What is the difference between sustainable and
unsustainable?

•In short, something is sustainable if it can

be maintained indefinitely and something is
unsustainable if it cannot be maintained
indefinitely.
What human activities are unsustainable?

•Some human activities that cause damage (either

directly or indirectly) to the environment on a global
scale include population growth, overconsumption,
overexploitation, pollution, and deforestation.
What are the causes of unsustainable
development?
• There are five root causes of unsustainable agricultural practices and degradation of the rural environment:
• Policy failure. ...
• Rural inequalities. ...
• Resource imbalances. ...
• Unsustainable technologies. ...
• Trade relations. ...
• Intensification through specialization. ...
• Intensification through diversification.
DON’T YOU KNOW THAT--
•According to World wildlife fund (WWF) in the years 2010-2013, the
world population has been consuming on one and one-half ‘Earths’ in
terms of resources and ecological service we access.
•This referred to as an ecological footprint, which refers to the goods
and services consumed by a person including the use of fossil fuels to
provide these services and products.
SOME THREATS INCLUDE: (AS OF 2014)
• HABITAT DESTRUCTION
• OVER FISHING
• POLLUTION
• INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
• WATER OVER EXTRACTION
• POACHING
RICHER COUNTRIES HAVE THE HIGHEST FOOTPRINT AND HIGHEST
CONSUMPTION COMPARED TO POORER COUNTRIES.

•USA & CHINA are responsible for 32

percent of global ecological footprint
WHAT IS UNSUSTAINABLE PATTERNS?
ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION

•The present system production and consumption creates

tremendous impact on the environment.
•The present day extraction and production processes often
involve over harvesting from ecosystems beyond the
regeneration of common water and land resources

DEFORESTATION

•This is the resultof over extraction of forest based products by

commercial logging and massive export of forest-based products.
•Exploitation of mineral wealth is exacerbated by the Philippine
policy that allows 100 % foreign ownership of mining companies.
ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION &
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
•Economic globalization means enhancement of trading among
countries.
•One of the most important goals is the pursuit of economic growth or
enhancement of production of goods and services. Increasing trading
is about encouraging competition (Cavanagh & Mander, 2004)
What is sustainable development for
economic globalization?

Sustainable development is an approach to economic planning

that attempts to foster economic growth while preserving the
quality of the environment for future generations.
How does globalization affect sustainable
development?

Globalization also promotes the transportation of raw

materials and goods using non- renewable resources. The
spread of factories around the world has made more
infrastructure necessary, which requires extracted substances
from the earth.
Why is it important to have a sustainable
development in economic globalization?
Sustainable development practices help countries grow in ways
that adapt to the challenges posed by climate change, which will
in turn help to protect important natural resources for ours and
future generations. By the year 2050, it is estimated that our
global population will likely reach 9 billion people.
