What is Sustainable Management of Food?
Sustainable Management of Food is a systematic approach that seeks to reduce
wasted food and its associated impacts over the entire life cycle, starting with the
use of natural resources, manufacturing, sales, and consumption and ending with
decisions on recovery or final disposal.

Stop Food Loss and waste, for the people, for the planet!

Reducing food losses and waste is essential in a world where the number of people
affected by hunger has been slowly on the rise since 2014, and tons and tons of
edible food are lost and/or wasted every day.
Globally, around 14 percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail,
while an estimated 17 percent of total global food production is wasted (11 percent
in households, 5 percent in the food service and 2 percent in retail).
Why is it important to reduce food loss and
waste?

Food loss and waste undermine the sustainability of our food systems. When food
is lost or wasted, all the resources that were used to produce this food - including
water, land, energy, labour and capital - go to waste. In addition, the disposal of
food loss and waste in landfills, leads to greenhouse gas emissions, contributing
to climate change. Food loss and waste can also negatively impact food security
and food availability, and contribute to increasing the cost of food.

Our food systems cannot be resilient if they are not sustainable, hence the need to
focus on the adoption of integrated approaches designed to reduce food loss and
waste. Actions are required globally and locally to maximise the use of the food
we produce.
With eight years left to reach targets 1, 2, and 3 of 
Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG), there is an urgent need to accelerate
action to reduce food loss and waste.

Our actions are our future


A sustainable world is one where everyone counts.
Governments, the private sector, academia, and civil
society and individuals need to work together in solidarity to prioritize the
right of all people to food, nutrition, peace and equality. Indeed, every one
of us, including youth, can work towards an inclusive and sustainable
future, showing greater empathy and kindness in our actions.  
We must ALL be the change.

What is the area/location where we see the problem?

Our focus area where we will try to work together to prioritize the right of all people to food is near by areas of our
campus like factories and localities.

How big is the problem in that area/ location?

There are around 850 million hungry people in the world and according to date one third of the food produced
around the world is never consumed.
We are in a place where we have food surpluses where on a daily basis food gets wasted but as soon as we step out
of the campus we see people facing food shortages in the nearby factories and localities.

Our Vision

• Beat global hunger and bring out the best of humanity using food as a medium.

• The idea is to create self-sustained chapters who will look after their local community. And in process, inspire
people around us to give back to those who need it the most.
Activities Planned

Step 1: Collecting data from people about their meals and its constituents.

Step 2 : Splitting their meal in form of macros. ( i.e. proteins, carbohydrates and fats)

Step 3 : Initiate pilot projects on food distribution.

Step 4 : Set up of Derabassi chapter with the help of Robin Hood Army.

Step 5 : Managing the food and Volunteer department of the Derabassi chapter.

Step 6 : Monitoring. Try to scale food drives.

Indicators To Monitor and Validate Progress

• Observation
• Feedback from ground staff regarding improvement in the existing situations
• Feedback from the students and stakeholders regarding the training session through personal approach and
surveys.
• WE VISIT NEARBY FACTORIES AND HOTELS, AND RESTAURANTS (DERA BASSI
) TO FIND OUT THE WAYS HOW TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM AND IT IS DONE BY
OUR ALL GROUP MEMBERS .WE CONDUCT A SURVEY (GOOGLE FORM)
REGARDING THE FOOD WASTAGE PROBLEM.
• TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF OUR SELECTED NGO(ROBINHOOD)
THAT THEY AREN’T ABLE TO FOCUS ON AREAS LIKE ZIRAKPUR AND DERA
BASSI , THEIR MAIN FOCUS AREA IS CHANDIGARH, SO WE START OUR PILOT
PROJECT IN WHICH WE ARE TRYING TO CONNECT PEOPLE WITH THEM, AND
CREATING AWARENESS THROUGH POSTERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA
