Application of Predictive

Cardiovascular Health in HPC.

Why was super computer modeling & simulation used in Predictive
Cardiovascular Health ?
-The trend has been to use super computer modeling & simulation in Predictive Cardiovascular
Health to reduce the experiments on animal and human, due to the risk, cost and difficulty
involved.

What is the benefit from heart ?

- lungs pass oxygen to blood , then returns to heart .

- our heart pumps & the oxygenated blood has been taken to our body .

- Every cell of your body requires oxygen to carry its metabolic activities of life .
APPLICATIONS
-About three years ago,
IBM began to see the interaction between heart problems and drugs, and they
discovered that the drug candidate did not always have the best effect, and the heart
could suddenly stop.
They use super computers simulation to build a scalable model called "Cardioid" to
mimic and rebuild the human heart.
APPLICATIONS

1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research

- goal is to make a high-resolution model that is also reliable, which is why justifies our
emphasis on capturing the details of cardiac contraction. Our efforts are currently
directed towards creating a new model of cardiac filament that will be able to reproduce
a variety of experimental observations with Cardioid.

- And unlike previous programs that could only simulate about ten heartbeats or
lower, the Cardioid program could mimic thousands of heartbeats. Plus, it was 300
times faster than most models.
APPLICATIONS

1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research

-Achieving greater detail requires high
computational demands. We are developing
new algorithms to execute tissue-level
cardiac models at an unprecedented level of
parallelism, which exploit IBM's High Performance Computing (HPC) Platforms. An
example of the model for canine heart is shown on the image.
APPLICATIONS
1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research
- A major research expertise of our group is 3D high resolution modeling of cardiac
mechanics. Using computational models, we simulate cardiac function under different
conditions including myocardial infarction and heart failure. In the future, such
detailed cardiac models could prove advantageous to healthcare professionals by
providing customized and data-driven care to patients with heart-related conditions.
APPLICATIONS

1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research

- This 3D model is coupled
to a lumped model of blood
circulation in the body. This
allows us to simulate all
phases of the cardiac cycle
APPLICATIONS

1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research

- Cardioid is a high-resolution cardiac solver that can use ultrasound, MRI, and CT
data derived from real patients. They get the real data & images about patients
from the Visible Human Project.
- The Visible Human Project is an effort to create a detailed dataset of cross-sectional photographs of
the human body, in order to facilitate anatomy visualization applications.
APPLICATIONS
1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research
- The National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project – NIH
The NLM Visible Human Project has created publicly-available complete,
anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of a human male body and
a human female body. Specifically, the VHP provides a public-domain library of
cross-sectional cryosection, CT, and MRI images obtained from one male cadaver
and one female cadaver. The Visible Man data set was publicly released in 1994 and
the Visible Woman in 1995.
APPLICATIONS

1- Cardioid Cardiac Modeling Project - IBM Research

- The video below shows a simulation of Torsades de Pointes, a particular type of tachyarrhythmia characterized by a
slow quasi-periodic envelope modulation. Two views of the same heart are shown with red – cellular electrical
activation and blue – cellular electrical relaxation. Arrhythmia, which is induced by a point stimulus simulating an
ectopic acticvation, forms the spiral waves at the end of the relaxation. Spiral waves with continually changing
orientation generate with the dramatic changes in amplitude in the ECG.

APPLICATIONS
2- CNN Health
- One successful application of cardiovascular modeling is the report by CNN health of the 3D
simulation of a 4-year-old girl's heart at Nicklaus Children Hospital in 2015. That's phenomenal, as
surgeons were able to operate a simulated version of the patient's heart and envisage the best
operational procedures before the actual surgery.

- Surgeons in Miami used a 3-D printed model of a girl's heart to plan her complicated surgery. http://

(At the end , The model helped the team and patient with saving about two hours in the operating room
because he was able to have a clearer plan to do the surgery.)
APPLICATIONS
2- CNN Health
- 3-D printers
- could produce organs that can be transplanted into patients.

- Simulated organs are being used to prepare and practice for many operations
-With a 3D printer, we can create exact copies of organs that doctors can use to plan surgery, and
even perform surgeries. The printer uses images from patients' MRI or CT scans as a template and
places layers of rubber or plastic.
APPLICATIONS
3- LIVING HEART (Dassault Systèmes):
 goals
-physicians and surgeons could virtually analyze their patients’ health and plan therapies and
surgeries using the same advanced simulation technology that the automotive, aerospace,
energy and hi-tech industries rely on to test their product before they are built? What if
medical devices could be designed and safely tested in the virtual world before ever being
tested in the real world
-apply the power of realistic simulation to human modeling, we can revolutionize medical care.
APPLICATIONS
3- LIVING HEART (Dassault Systèmes):
- A translational research initiative to revolutionize cardiovascular science
through realistic simulation .

- The Living Heart Project is uniting leading cardiovascular researchers,

educators, medical device developers, regulatory agencies, and
practicing cardiologists on a shared mission to develop and validate highly
accurate personalized digital human heart models.
- Aswan Heart Center /Magdi Yacoup Heart Foundation From the current members in the project.
APPLICATIONS
3- LIVING HEART :

-The cornerstone of the project, the Living Heart Model on the 3DEXPERIENCE
platform is now being used worldwide to create new ways to design and test
new devices and drug treatments Use of virtual patients will increase industry
innovation and pave the way for faster approvals and quicker patient access
to safe, effective new treatments for the world’s leading cause of
death –heart disease.
APPLICATIONS
3- LIVING HEART :
– whose delays and costs can impede patient access to novel treatments – without
losing rigor or confidence in a device’s safety and efficacy. Researchers hope the
