What is Southeast Asia like?

Southeast Asia consists of a mixture of islands,


peninsulas and coastal areas. It lies within the tropics
and was once heavily forested. Today great cities have
sprung up across the region. This has made it, along
with China, one of the power houses of the modern
world.
Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia. It
has many volcanoes and high mountains. Further north,
the Philippines is another island nation. Here typhoons
are sometimes a hazard.
Most of Southeast Asia was rules by Europeans but
has forged ahead since independence. Factories now
produce cars, clothes and electrical goods. Palm oil is a
key crop. Oil, tin and gold remain important natural
resources. The development was so fast the countries
were nicknames “tiger economies”.
