• Let’s look at Africa’s geography in the next slide!

 It has the shortest coastline among all continents despite being the
second-largest.

• It was built in the 19th century.


• It connects the Mediterranean sea to the Red sea and allows ships to
pass through.
• (You also might’ve heard about the ship that got stuck in the Suez
Canal recently which blocked the Canal).

• It’s the world’s largest desert.


• It covers more than 4,800 kilometres.
• Entire countries such as China and The United States Of America can

• In South Africa.
• It’s a semi-arid savannah.
• Surprisingly, despite being a desert, the Kalahari is cooler than the
Sahel or the Sahara.

The Sahel and West Africa
• The Sahel is a grassy savannah that borders the Sahara Desert.
• Djenne and Timbuktu are some famous cities which are located in the
Sahel.

• The West African Coast were all formerly colonized by the French or
the British.
• Nigeria is rich in oil and petroleum. It’s capital is Lagos.

• It was created by plate tectonics.


• It runs for about 7,000 kilometres.
• Splits in the formation revealed years of geological rock formation.

• Central Africa is dominated by the Congo Basin.


• The area near the Zaire (Congo) River is rich in minerals.

• Rich agricultural and mineral area with lots of diamonds.
