PROBLEMS FACED BY

STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY

INTRODUCTION
While time spent at college is a fond
memory and a happy experience for most,
student life is not without its rough
patches. Everyone's situation is unique, but
there are a few problems that almost all
college students deal with at least once
during their time at school. Some of these
problems will be discussed in today's
presentation.
1) Increase competition
Student face increase competition two times in their life as
student, competition in getting university and then
competition in academics after getting admission. The later
one is more difficult because everyone is as good as you. Its
hard to stand out and make a name of yourself. This
constant pressure of competition takes a lot of toll on
students creative brain resulting physical and metal Illness.
To pass out without participating in this competition is
impossible. At some point in student life, you are being part
of it. It can be in form of having internal expectations or
academic goals.
2) Social Anxiety
After creating a comfort zone in school for over more then 10
years. Students are expected to adjust in environment which
forces them to interact with complete strangers. While most
of us experience some level of social unease when we feel
scrutinized by others, such as while speaking in public or
presenting at meetings, This fear is almost invariably provoked
by the feared situations, which are avoided or endured with
severe distress, and interferes significantly with personal,
occupational, and social functioning.
After discarding ineligible students, the total was 666
adolescents. Of these 348 (52.3%) were male. The overall
prevalence using a cut-score of 6 was just over 30%
(Table 1). Higher rates were seen in students studying for
degrees in arts (38%) and health sciences (36%), while
lower rates were seen in science (28%), engineering
(28%) and medicine (16%). The differences between
students studying medicine versus health science and
versus arts were significant.
Tips for overcoming social anxiety
1. Build new friendships
2. Attend social functions
3. Be ready for conversation
4. Exercise, daily if possible
5. Eat healthy 
6. Practice mindfulness
3) Ragging
Ragging involves abuse, humiliation, or harassment of new
entrants or junior students by the senior students. Ragging is
a subset of bullying. Unlike various complex forms of bullying,
ragging is easily recognizable.
Ragging is considered a part of university culture but sometimes
can have negative effect on students. It effects ones mental
health, studies and overall performance in university. It also
prevents new students to adjust in university. This also gives
birth to a sense of avoidance in new students, they are more
likely to avoid events and competitions.
4) Image and Reputation
Image and repute is important for survival in university. As
university life is quick people tend to make a quick judgment
and perception about you. And what kind impression people
have about you, reflects in their behavior towards you.
Those who lacks confidence and social skills are least likely to
make a good image or none at all. Giving the effect of not
‘fitting in’ and if you don’t fit in you ‘don’t belong’. In short you
don’t have any identity. This causes students to feel left out and
more likely to be forgotten in projects.
1 bad impression takes 4 consecutive good impressions to change
others opinion about you.
5) Education cost and Student Debt
Money can be a huge stressor when paying for your education.
The major reason for less percentage of a higher education is
high fee structure. Many parents want to give higher education
to their children but their financial positions could not allow
them to do so getting into your dream universities is like a
dream. Some students leave their education mid-way due to
the financial crisis or because they cannot afford education
expenses.
 Getting scholarship is time consuming and requires a lot of
effort, it's basically luck whether students get scholarship or
not. This problem mainly happens with lower middle class
families where they can live a comfort lifestyle but they could
not afford higher education expenses. Students have to cut
down their own desires to full fill their university expenses.
6) Homesickness
Being a hostelite One of the first challenges you may face in
university is missing home. Even though you're meeting lots of
new people and trying new things, it's easy to miss your
friends and family back home.
During stressful days we students tend to seek emotional
support that is nowhere to be found in university. We miss
home cooked food, hugs from our parents and of course our
comfort zone.
7) Unhygienic Food and water
Food and water. The most important issue that students face is the
unavailability of quality food. Specially for hostel students, the quality
of food offered is not so good. Some students even fall ill. Some prefer
eating outside the university. Unhygienic water is another issue. It can
cause health effects, such as gastrointestinal illnesses, nervous system
or reproductive effects, and chronic diseases 
Washroom. it is a place we use every day. Public bathrooms often
seems to be more dirty. They’ve unpleasant smell and garbage on the
floor. University management need to clean toilets to promote
cleanliness to students and further teach them the importance of
washing their hands & flushing the toilet. And secondly it is difficult to
perform wudu because the place is very dirty. 
Prayer room. While offering prayer other students make too much
noise and it hampers the prayer. Students keep on talking and eating
which is totally wrong. Secondly prayer mat are unhygienic they’ve dust
and dirt which can be allergic to our skin and cause serious problem.
8) Family Expectations
Parental Expectations that are too high can harm
students. Students are constantly pushed to the edge by
their parents to build a bright future and succeed in life.
Increasingly high parental expectations are linked to
mental health issues later in life. High expectation from
parents cause stress, anxiety, depression and many other
issues. Stress lead to poor performance in studies.
It can also result in problems such as smoking drugs or
other kind of habits and addiction. It eventually effects
student’s personal life and personality.
11) Health Problems
All of the problems mentioned above eventually results in
health problems. The academic stress and tiring routine puts
the stress on body making it susceptible to illness and disease.
Common diseases found among students are sore throat, flu
and influenza, respiratory disease, stomach ache and back
ache.
These illness are caused by poor eating habits, bad sleeping
routine and mental stress. Low intake of calcium and other
vitamins also causes deficiency diseases.
On the other hand poor healthy activities such as exercise or
sports also aid in weak muscles, bones and brain.
12) Inadequate Sleep
Up to 60% of all college students suffer from a poor sleep
quality, and 7.7% meet all criteria of an insomnia disorder.
Sleep problems have a great impact on the students’ daily
life, for example, the grade point average. Due to irregular
daytime routines, side jobs and exam periods, they need
specialized treatments for improving sleep.
Students experience several important developments when
starting at university. They have to cope with “leaving home,
increased independence, changes in peer groups, new social
situations, and maintenance of academic responsibilities.
About 90% of university students have roommates, and
among them, 41% wake up at night due to the noise of
others.
Bed- and rise times on weekdays and weekends often differ
in the range of more than 1 to 2 hours. These challenges and
special circumstances faced by university students are
associated with sleep disturbances. Almost 27% of all
university students are at a risk of at least one sleep disorder.
 Furthermore, previous findings reported that a minimum
7.7% of students suffer from insomnia and 24.3% from
nightmares.
Beyond academic considerations, sleep problems in
university students are often connected with mental health
issues. It is common for students with insomnia to suffer
from mental health problems such as chronic fatigue,
depression, stress, lower optimism, anxiety and a lower
quality of life.
