THE PLASTIC RECYCLING PROCESS STEPS
3. Washing
Since cleaning gets rid of some of the contaminants that can hinder the process or destroy a
batch of recovered plastic, washing is an essential stage in the recycling of plastic. In this stage,
contaminants including product labels and adhesives, grime, and food residue are frequently
targeted. While washing plastic at this step is common, it's vital to keep in mind that this doesn't
lessen the necessity of making sure plastics are as free of pollutants as possible prior to disposal
and collection.
4. Shredding
After being passed into shredders, the plastic is reduced to much smaller pieces. Unlike
formed plastic items, these tiny bits can be reused after further processing. The downsized plastic
particles can also be sold as raw materials or used in other ways without further processing, like
as an ingredient in asphalt. Finding any lingering contaminants is also made possible by
shredding the plastic into tiny pieces. This is particularly true for impurities like metal, which
may not have been eliminated by washing but which can now be easily collected with a magnet.

Recyclable Plastics Non Recyclable Plastics
• Polystyrene, or PS • Bioplastics
To create foam cups in which to pour hot liquids, you
need polystyrene, or PS. PS is also present in plastic cutlery • Composite plastic
and yogurt cartons.
• Plastic-coated wrapping paper
• Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE
• Polycarbonate
Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, is a substance that
is used to make bins and plastic garbage bags. • Cling film
• Polypropylene, or PP
• Blister Packaging
Polypropylene, sometimes known as PP, is the material
that makes takeaway boxes, lunchboxes, and ice cream
containers.
• Plasticised Polyvinyl chloride or PVC
PVC, also known as plasticized polyvinyl chloride, is
present in all squeeze bottles and juice containers.
• High-density polyethylene, or HDPE
High-density polyethylene, or HDPE: Milk jugs and
shampoo bottles are made mostly from HDPE.
• Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET
Your plastic drink and juice bottles undoubtedly
include some polyethylene terephthalate, or PET.
