What are bridge languages and why are they
spoken?

 Bridge languages make communication possible between groups


of people who do not share a native language or dialect
 Throughout human history, they have been used for a number of
reasons, including:
 commercial reasons
 cultural, religious, diplomatic and administrative reasons
 exchanging information between scientists and other scholars of
different nationalities
What types of bridge languages exist around
the world?

 Bridge languages may either be:


 Pre-existing languages
 Pidgin languages
 Creole languages

 Some languages may be vernacular and bridge languages at the


same time
Some important bridge languages

 Latin and Koine Greek


 English
 French
 Russian
 Hindustani
 Swahili and Hausa
