 Drug - is defined as any chemical substance that can
affects bodily functions.
 It can be POSITIVE or NEGATIVE.
TYPES OF DRUGS
Drugs: 1. Prescription Drugs may only be brough when a
prescription is presented.

2. Over-the-counter drugs are substance that can be
easily accessed in various commercial centers.
(Pharmacies, Groceries, Sari-Sari Stores)

3. Controlled drugs are substance strictly regulated by
the law because of their behavior-altering and addictive
effects.

HOW DRUGS ENTER THE BODY

1. Drugs may come in the form of tablets, capsules,


or liquids.
2. Drugs may enter the body through the use of an
injection.
3. Drugs that come in powdered form may be
inhaled through the nose or mouth.
4. Drugs that may be applied to the body. (Spray,
Lotions, Ointments)
5. Drugs may be implanted or placed under the skin.
TERMINOLOGIES

1. RESPONSIBLE DRUG – practice of correctly using


drugs.
2. DRUG MISUSE – incorrect use of drugs.
3. DRUG ABUSE – continual use of drug not intended
for medical purposes but for pleasure, “get high”.
4. DRUG DEPENDENCE – a condition wherein a
person cannot function normally without using drugs.
Different Kinds of ILLEGAL DRUGS
A. Stimulants
 used to treat respiratory ailments (asthma, obesity, neurological conditions)
 It can speed up the process in the nervous system
 Uppers – can make a person feel alert, awake and very active.

Types of Stimulants
1. Cocaine – made from coca leaves.
2. Crack – is a variant of cocaine, more addictive and highly deadly.
3. Amphetamines – drugs that are chemically produced usually used to lose weight.
4. Methamphetamine – is a highly addictive variant of amphetamine “shabu”
5. Ephedrine – is produced from an ephedra plant, used to treat cold and obesity.
6. MDMA – (3-4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine) commonly known as ecstasy.
B. Depressant
 Slows down the process of the central nervous system
 They are called as sedatives or downers.

2 Types of Depressants
1. Barbiturate – substances prescribe to patients who find it difficult to sleep.
2. Benzodiazepine – substances prescribe to patients who are experiencing
anxiety problems. Known as tranquilizers.
C. Narcotics
 Slows down the process of the nervous system
 Also used as painkillers and can relieved diarrhea and heavy cough.
 It is made by 2 substances: opium and morphine.
 Codeine and heroin derived in morphine.
 Oxycontin example of narcotics.
 Narcotics are highly addictive.
D. Hallucinogens
 Drugs that can cause hallucinations
 It is also called psychedelic drugs.

Types of Hallucinogens
1. LSD – (lysergic acid diethylamide)
2. PCP - (Phencyclidine)
3. Ketamine – used in veterinary medicine.
E. Inhalants
 Can alter mood and behavior of a person.
 It can enter the body through sniffing or bagging.
Examples of Inhalants
a. Gasoline
b. Fingernail Polish remover
c. Wood Glue
d. Hairspray
e. Rugby fluid
f. Paint thinner
g. Marker pen fluid
h. Liquid wax
i. Wood varnish
