REPRESENTING
REAL-LIFE
SITUATIONS USING
PIECEWISE
FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVE:
• At the end of this lesson, you
should be able to represent
real-life situation using piece
wise functions.
Let’s Recall

y is a function of x

Identify the input, process and output of the situation.

x = n (# of days)

y = S (salary)
500/day

S(n) = 500n
Piecewise Functions
There are cases that functions requires
more than one formula in order to
obtain the given output. There are
instances when we need to describe
situations in which a rule or
relationship changes as the input value
crosses certain boundaries.
Piecewise Functions
• Each formula has its own domain, and the
domain of the function is the union of all
these smaller domains. We notate this
idea like this:

>, <, >, and <

Real life Situations
• A user is charged ₱250.00 monthly for a
particular mobile plan, which includes 200
free text messages. Messages in excess of
200 are charged ₱1.00 each. Represent the
monthly cost for text messaging using the
function t(m), where m is the number of
messages sent in a month.
Given:
• Situation 1: a charge of P250.00 per
month in 200 messages or less
• Situation 2: P250.00 per month and
a P1.00 charge in every messages
sent that exceed to 200
Required:
• Input= messages sent in a
month
• Output = Monthly cost for
text messaging
T(m) = ?
Solution:
• 𝑡(𝑚)={250 𝑖𝑓 0<𝑚≤200
(if sending messages is not
exceeding 200)

• 𝑡(𝑚) ={(250+𝑚) 𝑖𝑓 𝑚>200

(in case the messages sent
were more than 200)
You Can Do it! BY PAIR
A game at a theme park offers prize money based
on the number of balls you can successfully shoot
in one minute.
 0-7 successful shots: no prize
 8-15 successful shots: ₱150
 more than 15 successful shots: ₱200

Write a piecewise function that relates the prize

money offered to the number of successful shots
you make. Write the given, required and the
solution in the problem.
Real-life Example:

• A certain chocolate bar costs ₱50.00 per piece. However, if you buy
more than 5 pieces they will mark down the price to ₱48.00 per
piece. Use a piecewise function to represent the cost in terms of the
number of chocolate bars bought.
Activity: By pair

• The cost of hiring a catering service to serve food for a party is

₱250.00 per head for 50 persons or less, ₱200.00 per head for 51 to
100 persons, and ₱150.00 per head for more than 100. Represent
the total cost as a piecewise function of the number of attendees to
the party.

• A tricycle ride costs ₱10.00 for the first 2 kilometers, and each
additional kilometer adds ₱8.00 to the fare. Use a piecewise function
to represent the tricycle fare in terms of the distance d in kilometers.
Question

• What are your basis in

deriving an equation? In a
piecewise equation?
• What is Function and
piecewise function?
• What have you realized in
representing real-life situation
using functions? Piecewise
function?
Activity: BY PAIR
• Instructions:
At home or in your community, look for a
situation that could represent Piecewise
function. From the identified situation, write a
sample problem and its corresponding
function equation.
Sample Format: Function
• Situation: The budget for food is a function of
the number of family members.
• Problem: Reyes family has Php ₱1,500.00
food budget for each member of their family
in a month. Express the total food budget (B)
as a function of number of family members (n)
in one month.
• Function: 𝐵(n)=1500n
