 An adjective clause is a subordinate clause
used as an adjective to modify a noun or a
pronoun.
 Adjective clauses begin with relative pronouns:
who, whose, whom, which, of which, that OR
relative adverbs: when, why, where.
 Examples:
◦ The flowers (that) I bought for my mother are
beautiful.
◦ The friends (whom) I visited are my cousins.

An adverb clause usually modifies a verb, but it
may modify an adjective, an adverb, or even the
rest of the sentence in which it appears.
Example:
“Because the rain fell for three days, every street in
town was flooded.”
In our sample sentence, the “because” clause actually
modifies the rest of the sentence (the independent
clause).

A subordinate adverb clause can be
introduced by the subordinating
conjunctions in the following cases:

1. Adverb Clause of Reason


because, since, as
EX: You shouldn’t go out because it is raining now.

2. Adverb Clause of Time
after, before, since, when, while,
whenever, as, as soon as, once, until, as/so
long as, by the time, etc
EX: After Hamlet's uncle Claudius married Hamlet's
mother, Hamlet wanted to kill him.
3. Adverb Clause of Place
where, wherever
EX: You can go wherever you like.

4. Adverb Clause of Condition
if, unless, even if, only if, in case (that), whether or
not, in the event (that), provided (that)
EX: If the British co-operate, the Europeans may
achieve monetary union.
5. Adverb Clause of Opposition
although, whereas, even though, though, while
EX: They went on a field trip although it was raining.

6. Adverb Clause of Manner
as if, as though
EX: He speaks English as if he were a native speaker.
7. Adverb Clause of Comparison
than, as
EX: She is taller than her sister is.

in order that, so that
EX: He studies hard in order that he will pass the
exam with flying colors.
9. Adverb Clause of Result
so... that, such ... that
EX: She is so lazy that she always gets bad marks.
