People enjoy freedom because it gives them a sense of
control over things and people. They dislike responsibility
because it poses constraints on their actions. Yet, freedom
cannot be separated from responsibility. When you are young,
you have little freedom, and thus little responsibility. As you
become more responsible, you gain more freedom and can
make more decisions that affect your life.
You also make mistakes but are free to learn from these.
This means that you not only have the opportunity to make
choices, but also have to bear the consequences of your
actions, both good and bad. You can choose your actions-you
have that freedom. But you have to bear the consequences of
your actions. Therefore, you must learn to make responsible
choices.

can also live in freedom granted by law for
equal opportunity for life, liberty and the

The expression of freedom can be
impaired or limited by ignorance, fear, or
bad habits. To avoid the abuse of
freedom, most governments have
instituted laws. Those who feel they have
been maligned by another through the
abuse of the freedom of speech and of
the press can seek justice by filing
charges of either libel or slander.

Improving
style the Use of Freedom
The right use of freedom requires
responsibility that is manifested through
individual maturity and self-resistant.
EXAMPLE:
Consider how a student plays songs freely
and loudly from his digital tablet in the
dormitory. This conflicts with the rights of
other students to enjoy peace, rest or study.
We can do as we please only when our
activities build harmonious relationships and
peaceful situations. 12

Improving
style the Use of Freedom

Our freedom directs our activities to

be constructive. That is, they must build
up, or must be useful to those around
us and to ourselves. This is so because
freedom is also a social dimension. It is
a delicate balance of many
relationships. We can do what we want,
but it must be beneficial to all.
