According to Andin 1988 he defined PE as


an integral part of educational program design
to promote an optimum development of an
individual physically, mentally, socially and
emotionally through total body movement in
the performance of properly selected physical
activities.

“PHYSICAL + EDUCATION”
The term “physical” refers to the motor
abilities and the physical development of
the body whereas the term “education”
refers to the training and guidance
provided to the learner.

1. Physical Development Objective:

❖ The objective of physical development deals with the program of activities that
builds physical power in an individual through the development of the body.
❖ To develop motor skills like strength, endurance, flexibility, balance,coordination
etc for good performance in sports.
❖ refers to the advancements and refinements of motor skills, or, in other words,
children's abilities to use and control their bodies.

2. Mental Development Objective:


❖ The mental development objective deals with the ability to think and able to understand
situations in every game.
❖ Needs alertness of the mind, deep concentration and calculated movements in various
physical activities.

3. Social Development Objective:

❖ The social development objective is concerned with helping an individual in making


personal adjustments, group adjustment, and adjustments as a member of society.
❖ Players come closer to each other in spite of different culture and place.
❖ Better source of attaining qualities like fairplay, cooperation, sympathy, courtesy and
sportsmanship.

4. Emotional Development
❖ Being responsible for developing/ controlling various emotions like fear, hope, wonder and
anger.
❖ Individuals starts having control over his/her emotions when participating in physical activities.
❖ Character traits in a game.

1. Preservation of Cultural Heritage
 Physical Education is related to games and
sports.
 Every sport has some history of its origin &
from where it has been culturally influenced.
 Education about a game or sport helps to
preserve the cultural heritage of the place
where it has been originated.

 Physical Education provides a scope for an
understanding of the mechanical aspects of games,
sports and all the human body movements.
 These mechanical aspects are included in our
everyday life: center of gravity, maintaining
balance, Laws of Motion, Time, Speed & distance,
Law of Acceleration, Friction & Force, Equilibrium

3. Biological Content
 Physical education provides a scope for an understanding of
the biological aspects of the human body.
 It is also related with motor abilities & skills, it is
connected with biological content such as:
a) Functioning of the human body systems like
digestive system, muscular system, respiratory system etc. that
enable physical activities.
b) Pattern of human growth and development

4. Health Education and Wellness


 Physical Education is related with the health and hygiene of an
individual.
 It provides a great scope for educating students on the importance of
maintaining a good, clean proper surrounding which will ensure a good
hysical health.

a. Eating nutritious food


b. Washing hands before & after a meal
c. Knowledge about communicable & non- communicable diseases
d. Prevention & safety from getting illnesses
e. Boosting the immune system

 Physical education provides a great scope for identifying
individual talents of students related to their motor skills
and abilities.
 It also includes physical fitness training programs that
promote the qualitattive knowledge of remaining fit and
healthy.

a. Identifying the talents of the students with regard to
activities like calisthenics, body movements, body
postures, specific sport, aerobics etc.
b. It also promotes training programs which include warm
ups, exercises, yoga etc.

LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS

• is the act of moving from one place to another


• usually involves moving around the wider and
available area.
• basic locomotor movements include walking,
jumping, running, hopping, leaping, sliding,
galloping and skipping

WALKING
• shifting one’s weight from one foot to the other

RUNNING
• moving with longer strides and in faster speed than
walking

HOPPING
• springing on one foot and landing on the same foot

SKIPPING
• done with a step and a hop using the same foot

JUMPING
• springing on one foot or both feet and landing on
both feet

LEAPING
• springing on one foot and landing on the other foot

• done by gliding on the floor, sideward or
forward using the right and left foot
alternately

GALLOPING
• stepping on one foot and cutting the other
foot, either sideward or forward.

NON-LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS

• movements that are done in one place


• movements that stays in one place
• basic non-locomotor movements includes
stretching, bending, twisting, turning, lifting,
rotating, swinging & swaying

BENDING
• movement that causes the formation of the
body to curve

STRETCHING
• done by straightening or extending any part of
the body from the joints or limbs

• elevating a part of the body, usually the arms &
legs

TURNING
• partial or full rotation of the body while shifting the
base of support

TWISTING
• moving a part of the body around a long axis,
usually for the head and body

ROTATING
• done by moving a part of the body around axis

SWINGING
• pendular movement below an axis

SWAYING
• pendular movement above an axis
