VERBS

Express action or state of being. They


determine the subject as to doer or receiver of
an action. They also complete the thought of a
sentence.
Verbs show an action in a sentence.
ADVERBS
Adverbs
Adverbs are used to modify verbs, adjectives
and other adverbs. They are analyzed by
asking the questions When?, Where?, Why?,
How?, Under what conditions? and To what
extent?
a. The nightingale sang (VERB) sweetly (ADVERB).
b. The soldier marched (VERB) smartly (ADVERB).
c. He owns a very (ADVERB) expensive (ADJECTIVE)
car.
d. The traffic moved quite (ADVERB) slowly
(ADVERB) down the road.
TYPES OF ADVERBS
ADVERB OF TIME
tells us the time when an action took place. To identify it
we can ask a question starting with “when”

EXAMPLES:
Late, just, next, soon, now, still, later, today,
nights, tonight, finally, mornings, evenings, already,
recently, tomorrow, afternoons, currently, yesterday,
eventually, afterwards
EXAMPLES:

1. Eat your lunch now.


2. She came yesterday.
3. I will be going to the mountain soon.
4. She will be playing the match today.
5. I will talk to you later.
ADVERB OF PLACE
tells us where the action was carried out. To
identify it we can ask a question starting “where”
EXAMPLES:
Here, there, home, abroad, outside, nowhere,
anywhere, aside, elsewhere, upstairs, somewhere,
underground, northwards, westwards, eastwards,
southwards, upwards
Examples:
1. There was snow everywhere.
2. Shiny did not want to go there.
3. Players will play baseball outside the room.
4. Mary stays upstairs.
5. Nobody stayed here for a week.
ADVERB OF DEGREE
tells us to what degree, extent or intensity something
happens. To identify it we can ask a question starting
with “how much”
EXAMPLES:
Too, very, so, quite, almost, really, greatly, highly, totally,
hugely, enough, extremely, perfectly, gratefully, partially,
immensely, adequately
EXAMPLES:
1. The poor man was terribly hungry.
2. She hardly works.
3. The dinner was absolutely delicious.
4. This is an extremely complicated issue.
5. The garden is immensely beautiful.
ADVERB OF MANNER
Most adverbs of manner are closely related to
the corresponding adjectives. Although some
words can be used as either adjectives or adverbs,
in most cases, adverbs of manner are formed by
adding “ly” to the corresponding adjectives. To
identify them we can ask a question starting with
“how” or in what manner”
EXAMPLES:
1. Hannah dances gracefully.
2. The boy played the guitar loudly.
3. The black horse ran swiftly.
4. He swims well.
5. Mireya spoke softly.
ADVERB OF FREQUENCY
tells us how often an action is carried out. To identify it
we can ask a question starting with “how often”
EXAMPLES:
Daily, often, rarely, weekly, monthly, annually, always,
seldom, normally, regularly, generally, frequently,
sometimes, occasionally, periodically, hardly, ever,
almost, never
Examples:
1.He is always present.
2. We seldom see Zoey.
3. My dentist told me I should floss twice daily.
4. I exercise regularly.
5. I play tennis occasionally.
