DISASTER PREVENTION AND

MITIGATION PRACTICES
AMONG SECONDARY
SCHOOL IN BAAO DISTRICT

Introduction
The Philippines has been battered by many catastrophic
storms and other natural and man-made disasters since
time immemorial due to its geographic location both at the
typhoon belt and ring of fire. The country is prone to
multiple recurring hazards such as cyclones, floods,
earthquake, and landslides. In truth, the 2012 World Risk
Report ranked the Philippines third out of 173 countries in
terms of disaster risk.
Baao District particularly is composed of Five (5)
secondary clusters. In that the school and
community in the district is identify as flood prone
area and even landslide prone area. Thereby, the
school, in the said district maybe prone to
adverse impact of disasters and calamities
because of its locations. Hence, this case
motivated the researcher to conduct this study to
identify disaster prevention and mitigation
practices among the schools in the district.

Research Methodology
The study employed the descriptive method of research. It
used the descriptive method in the analysis of the existing
condition of the school as their stakeholders assesses the
disaster prevention and mitigation practices in the school. The
study utilized the descriptive method for it is a scientific
method which involves observing and describing the
behaviour of a subject without influencing it in anyway
Also, a survey questionnaire method was employed.
Respondents

The respondents of the study were selected purposively


30 per Secondary Schools in Baao District. The group used as
respondents were 3 School Disaster Risk Reduction
Management Team Members (SDRRMTM), 10 Students, 2
Non-Teaching Staff, 10 Teachers, 5 Parents and 5
Representative coming from Municipal Disaster Risk
Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC)
Data Gathering Instrument

This study used Questionnaires and Unstructured


interview which focus on the Disaster prevention and
mitigation practices of schools
Statistical Tools
To treat the data gathered from the questionnaires.
Descriptive statistical tool was employed.

The answer in the questionnaire as to determine the extent
of DepEd Secondary Schools achievement on DRRM goals
and objective in disaster prevention and mitigation were
interpreted based on the following scale:

4 3.4 – 4.19 Almost Achieved
3 2.6 – 3.39 Somewhat Achieved
2 1.8 – 2.59 Slightly Achieved
1 1.0 – 1.79 Not Achieved
The answer in the questionnaire as to the difference of
responses of the stakeholders in disaster prevention and
mitigation were interpreted based on the following scale:
