Essay
• The word essay is defined in “The Concise Oxford Dictionary”as

“a literary composition (usually prose and


short) on any subject “
• It is a written composition giving expression to one’s own personal
idea
• It expresses personal opinions
• It gives information on any subject
What is an Essay ?
• The main purpose of an essay is to
1. discuss
2. persuade
3. describe
4. explain
5. interpret
6. or analyze a particular topic.
Characteristics of essay writing
• A good essay may contain the following characteristics:
• Unity
• Order
• Brevity
• Style
• Personal Touch
Essay Structure
• An essay has three main parts :

 An introduction (introductory paragraph )


 A body (at least one , but usually more paragraphs )
 A conclusion ( concluding paragraph )
Classification of Essay Writing
Essay may be classified as:
• Narrative
• Descriptive
• Expository
• Reflective
• Imaginative
Narrative
In narrative essay:
 Real life experience
It may sound east to do
It challenges the student to think and write about themselves.
It should try to inolve the reader by making the story.
Descriptive
• It paints the picture with WORDS.
 A writer might describe
1:a person
2:place
3:object
4:or memory of special significance
 It communicate deeper through description.
 Sensory details
Expository
In expository essay :
• the writer explains ,a topic using facts, statistics and examples.
 It has variation such as
1: The comparison and Contrast essay
2: The cause and effect essay
3: The “how to” or process essay
Reflective
A reflective essay consists of
• Refections or thoughts on some topics
• Abstract nature
• For example:
a: habits ,qualities
b: social ,political and domestic topics
c: philosiophical subjects
d: religious and theological topics
Imaginative
Essays on subjects such as the
• Feelings and experiences
• In such the writer is called to place himself in imagination in a
position of which he has had no actual experience .
• Such subject as ‘If I were a king “ or “The autobiography of a
horse”
Uses /Importance
• The most common use of the essay is to evaluate students'
performance in the classrooms.

• Sometimes we write an essay just to convince the readers for the
