WHAT IS READING?

1. It is the process of the action or skills of reading.


2. It is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and
getting meaning from them.
3. It is an active process of constructive meanings of word.
Intensive Reading

• Intensive reading “Reading something


thoroughly and with proper understanding
for some specific aims and tasks is called
intensive reading.”
• For examples: A bookkeeping report or a
contract.
Intensive Reading Goals

• Focusing on new language (such as vocabulary


and grammar).
• Focusing on ideas (such as themes and topics).
• Learning new skills (such as making inferences
and identifying main ideas).
• Paying attention to text features such as genre
structure.
Characteristics

Reader is intensely involved in looking inside the


text.
Focus on linguistic or semantic ( concerned with
meaning ) details of a reading.
Draw pictures to aid them(such as in promlem
solving)
Read carefully
Aim is to build more language knowledge rather
than simply practice the skill of reading.
Examples of Intensive Reading

• Book keeping report


• Insurance claim
• Contract
Extensive Reading

• Extensive reading is carried out “to achieve


a general understanding of a text.”
• Extensive read large amounts of high
interest material;usually out of
class,concentrating on meaning,reading for
gist”and skipping unknown words.”
• The aims of extensive reading are to build
reader confidence and enjoyment.
Goals of Extensive Reading

• Focusing on texts
• Learning a language properly(vocabulary)
• Build reading speed and fluency
• Reading for pleasure.

• Novels
• Comic books
