Graphite

Collage
Grade 11 Summative
Step 1: Coming up with your theme
- In your sketchbook brainstorm different themes for your final drawing.
- After finishing take a picture right away and put it on google
classroom.
- Example:

Bill 23 - Graphite Collage Europe
Save our Ideas Trip 2022
Wetlands

Dune
Step 3: Creating your Collage
- There are two ways to create your collage: Digitally or you can cut
and paste onto a piece of paper.
- We have many magazines and I can print images.
- Keep all of your images - even if you don’t use some and place them
in a document
- I want to see ALL rough work - even the things that don’t work out.
- You must show Ms. Smith your collage before getting good copy
paper.

* If pasting place all your images before gluing!

Keep in mind: Focal Point
• The area with the heaviest visual
weight (what you notice first) is
the focal point.

• The focal point should be the

most important part of your image

• Eyes often become focal points

(our brains are trained to notice
them)

Johannes Vermeer, Girl with

a Pearl Earring, 1665
Balance
Visual Weight
This composition
is unbalanced.
The black
rectangle has a
heavy visual
weight, with no
counterbalance.

The composition
is “leaning to the
right.”
Visual Weight

• Multiple smaller dark objects can balance

one large dark object.
Visual Weight

• A small but high

contrast area
can balance a
large, dark area
Visual Weight

• A large, high contrast

area would unbalance
this same work.
Movement
• Ideally, the visual weight in
your work should be balanced
in an interesting way.

• The eye should move fluidly

from the focal point and travel
all around the image.

• If the painting is unbalanced,

the eye will rest on the focal
point and have no reason to
skip from one area of interest
to another.
Step 2: Creating your Collage
- Example:
Step 3: Transferring the collage to graphite paper
- Using the grid method you will be transferring your outlines onto a
newsprint paper
- After you have completed you will then lightly put your outlines on
good copy paper!

Step 4: Shading
- Using pencil - start to shade your collage
- Don’t be afraid to push your shadows
- I should see evidence of mastery - using multiple pencil techniques, clean
shading, no smudges on the white of the paper
- If you are right handed start on the top most left and work down and to the right*
- If left handed start on the top most right side and work down and to the left*
- You can also put a white piece of paper under your hand while you work*

*These tips will help reduce smudging of your work

Step 5: Written Reflection of your work
- Should be at least two pages in length - and in paragraph form.
- Able to use critical thinking in assessing one's own work (growth and learning
are described in written reflection)
- Informed thinker, using creative strategies in identify and make decisions to
solve problems
- Using the elements and principles of design in your reflection (Contrast,
Balance, Emphasis, Movement, White Space, Proportion, Hierarchy,
Repetition, Rhythm, Pattern, Unity, and Variety.)
- When reflecting on one's own work you should always be referring to specific
parts of your artwork.
