What is Sustainable Development?
Introduction
• Sustainable development is a way of organizing society so that it can exist in
the long term.
• Human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

What is Sustainable Development?
History
• The industrial revolution is connected to the rise of the idea of sustainable
development.
• From the second half of the 19th century, Western societies started to
discover that their economic and industrial activities had a significant
impact on the environment and the social balance.
• Several ecological and social crises took place in the world and rose
awareness that a more sustainable model was needed. Here are some
examples of the economic and social crises that shook the world in the
twentieth century:
– 1907: the American banking crisis
– 1923: the crisis of American hyperinflation
– 1929: the financial crisis of the 1930s begins
– 1968: the worldwide protests against bureaucratic elites
– 1973 and 1979: oil shocks
– 1982: the debt shock of developing

What is Sustainable Development?
History

• In September 2015, countries adopted a set of Sustainable Development


Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for
all.

• Immunization is one of the best buys in global health and has a crucial role
in achieving 14 of the 17 SDGs. As one of the most far-reaching health
interventions, it closely reflects the ethos of the SDGs: “leaving no one
behind”.

have basic healthcare, security
and education.

• Predicted worldwide poverty rate


is 7% by 2030.

• COVID-19 has led to the first


rise in extreme poverty in a
generation (119-124 Million
people)

• Violence against women persists


unacceptably high levels and is
infected by pandemic.

lack access to it.

• 2.3 Billion people live in water-


stressed countries (2018)

• 123 countries are not on track of


sustainably managing water

electricity.

• One-third of the world’s


population use dangerous and
inefficient cooking systems.

• Targets for 2030 include using


more renewable, affordable

economic growth and decent
employment for all.

• For many countries, economic


growth is expected to return to
pre-pandemic levels only in 2022
or 2030.

innovation.

• Increased investment in R&D is


essential to finding solutions for
crises such as COVID-19. 2020

population should be able to
grow their income faster than
average.

• Refugees proportion has more


than doubled since 2010.

• Income inequality may reduce


due to financial crisis by
COVID-19

affordable housing and make
settlements inclusive, safe and
sustainable.

• Avg. global share of urban area

friendly production, reduce waste
and boost recycling.

promoting renewable energy.

• The climate crisis continues,

and marine resources.

• Dead zones (Polluted oceans) are


rising at alarming rate 400
(2018) to 700 (2019).

• To stop degradation, we must
preserve forest, desert and
mountain ecosystems.

• Almost all countries has adopted


the legislation for preventing or
controlling invasive alien
species.

with strong institutions that
provide justice for all.

• The killing of human rights


defenders was reported to be
increased 18% from 2019 i.e.
331 are killed in 32 countries by
2021

• If all countries are to achieve the
goals, international cooperation
is vital.

• 63% of low/lower-middle
incomes countries need
additional financing for data and
statistics to cope pandemic
challenges
