Who is Consumer ?
 A consumer is one that buys goods for consumption and not for resale or commercial purpose.

 Consumer play a vital role in the economic system of a Capitalist Economy.

 Definition :-
As per section 2 (7) (i) consumer means any person who- buys any goods for a consideration
which has been paid or promised or partly paid and partly promised, or under any system of deferred
payment and includes any user of such goods other than the person who buys such goods for
consideration paid or promised or partly paid or partly promised or under any system of deferred
payment when such use is made with the approval of such person
Consumer Protection
• Consumer Protection is the practice of safeguarding by
buyers of goods and service and the public, against
unfair trade practise in the market place.

• Law that pertains to things the producers of goods most


do to protect consumers from harm is generally referred
to as Consumer Rights .

 Right to safety :- It means Right to be Protected against the marketing of goods and service
which are hazardous to life & property.

 Rights to be Informed :- It means Right to be Informed about the quality, quantity, potency,
purity, standard and price & goods so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade
practises.

 Right to Choose :- It means Right to Assured, wherever possible or access to variety of goods
and service at competitive price.

 Right to be Heard :- It means that the consumers interests will receive due consideration at
appropriate forums.

 Right to be seek Redressal :- It means Right to seek Redressal against unfair trade practices or
unscrupulous exploitation of consumers

 Right to Consumer Education :- It means the Right to Acquire the Knowledge and Skill to be
an informed consumer throughout life.
Safeguarding Rights
The 4th and 5th consumer rights are
responsible for the safeguarding the
all other rights present in the consumer
protection act, 1986 .

This two rights helps in regulating the


consumer rights inside the country.
Consumer Rights in India

The Consumer Protection Bill 1986 was passed


by both the houses of Parliament and it received
the assent of the President on 24th, December
1986. It came on the statutes book as
THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT, 1986
(68 of 1986).
Violation Of Rights
A product or service is only worth the amount
paid by the consumer if it derives consumer
satisfaction. Due to lack of awareness about
consumer rights, many consumers are exploited
by misleading advertisements, deceptive billing
practices, selling of defective goods, online
frauds, hoarding, price discrimination, etc.
