Tabulation
• Tabulation is a systematic and logical representation of numerical data in rows and columns to facilitate
comparison and statistical analysis

• The method of placing organised data into tabular form is known as tabulation
Objectives of Tabulation
 To simplify complex data

It reduces the bulk of information in a simplified and meaningful form so that it can be easily interpreted by

common person in less time

 To bring out essential features of data

It brings out the main characteristics of data and presents the facts clearly and precisely without textual

expatiation

 To facilitate comparison

The representation of data in rows and columns is helpful in detailed comparison

 To facilitate statistical analysis
The task of computing average, dispersion, correlation etc become easier if data is presented in the form of

table

 To save space

It presents facts in abetter way than the textual form and save space without sacrificing quality and quantity

of data

 Ability of graphical representation

The numbers recorded in the table make it easy to draw a statistical chart

 Number of tables

 Title of the table

 Column heading

 Row heading

Types of tabulation in statistics
 Simple tabulation in statistics

Tables that express only single feature of a particular data. These tables show only one feature of the

information

Eg: Total population of a particular block

 Complex tabulation in statistics

Tables represent multiple features of data simultaneously.

Eg: Male and female population of a particular block and total population
