Evaluating Algebraic
Expressions
Objectives:

1. Recall the rules in operations on integers, PEMDAS,

and exponential notation; and

2. Evaluate mathematical expressions for the given values

of the variables.
EXPONENTIAL NOTATION
= 729 Base- gives the number that is being multiplied.
The base is 9. Exponent- tells you how many times the base is
used as a factor.
The exponent is 3. Power- is the product of equal factors
The power is 729.

EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

To evaluate an algebraic expression means to replace a variable

with a particular value and to simplify the expression.
We evaluate an expression by substituting the value for the
variable and finding the value of the expression.

Evaluate.
1. 3x for x = 3 2. 3xy for x = 3; y = -2 3. 3x + y for x = 4; y = 5
= 3 (3) = 3 (3) (-2) = 3 (4) + 5
=9 = -18 = 12 + 5
= 17
