PRINCIPLES OF LAYOUT

What is Layout?

- It is a process of
planning and arranging
in detail something such
as a magazines or
newspapers to be
produced.
1. BALANCE
-the placement of elements on the page
such that text and graphic elements are
distributed in a pleasing or harmonious
manner.
FORMS:
• SYMEMETRIC BALANCE (formal)
-it is achieved by making all elements
visually equal on all sides
-Elements on the page are arranged in
such a way, that there exists a line or lines
of reflection. It can exists horizontally,
vertically across diagonals, or any
combination of the above.
-in layouts with an even balance, the graphics
MUST NOT OVERPOWER the text.
-Designs that need more stability, a
strong organizational structure, and a
classic and trusting message, tend to use
more symmetry in the design.
• ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE (informal)

- Arrangement of unlike objects of equal

weight on each side of the page.
- it is achieved by creating an odd number
of elements or where the elements are off-
center.
- elements may be unequal in position
and intensity. To create balance there must
be an increase in intensity to compensate
for the change in position.
RADIAL BALANCE

-is any form of representation that

achieves a visual balance through circles.
-elements on the page radiate from a
central point. Examples of radial balance
might appear in a circular arrangement such
as the petals on a flower. Often the center
point is the focus of the design. Radial
designs can also be spiral in nature.
Guidelines

1. Avoid tombstoning.
2. Build from top to bottom or left to right.
3. Observe harmony.
4.Arrange both elements  in such a way that no
one area of the design overpowers other
areas.
5. Emphasize your main topic.
